GIBBONEY, DANIEL PATRICK, SR. ’72 Daniel Patrick Gibboney Sr. Cincinnati - "You're looking good today." Of course, this sounds like a nice greeting. It was. But because it was said by Daniel Patrick Gibboney Sr., it was also funny. In his later years, Dan couldn't see well. But his wit, his self-deprecating humor, only got better. And most of those jokes shared between sips of Guinness? We can't really print them here. Dan passed away May 7, 2018, surrounded by those who laughed with him the most, his wife Betsey and his children, Danny Gibboney ’04, Maury and Kevin Gibboney ’08. Born June 7, 1954, Dan possessed deep pride for his family, especially his late father, Dr. Lawrence Gibboney, and his mother, Elizabeth. Through Dan's deft storytelling, his parents were there even after they were gone, present in those conversations at holiday dinner tables or chats on front porches on sunny days. For Dan, memories never rested. They were to be shown and shared with everyone, even those who weren't there for the moment. His experiences belonged to others. And the best experiences ended with a punchline. Dan was always a big part of this big family, one that includes siblings Mary Ann, Mike, Betsy, Kathy, Sue and her husband, Leo, Larry Gibboney ’77 and his wife Luanne, Patti, Julie and her husband, Goose. Dan cherished his time at St. Xavier High School, a place where he forged friendships for life, a second family, really - and a place where he told more jokes we can't print here. He went on to Rollins College. Next, Xavier University, where he earned a master's degree in business administration. Dan launched Concorde Labeling Systems in Lockland with his brother Larry. He technically worked in sales. But work was always more of a place for practical application of economic theory. Dan's head was so big he could never find hats, after all. He loved to think and challenge and be challenged. But he loved so much more than that. He loved golf and always carried around a $2 bill for bets on the green. He loved mediocre kettle danishes."The West Wing" was his favorite. He always had Camel filters and UDF coffee on hand. Dan's albums are a record of him, a reflective soundtrack. There's the heady Grateful Dead and insistent Jethro Tull. Cerebral Oscar Peterson and fellow trickster Warren Zevon. There will be music and laughter - and maybe some mediocre kettle danishes - at a visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hodapp Funeral Home, 6041 Hamilton Ave. in Cincinnati. St. Clare's Catholic Church, 1443 Cedar Ave., will host his funeral mass at 10 a.m. Saturday. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Cincinnati Association for the Blind & Visually Impaired. Condolences at hodappfuneralhome.com.
