St. Xavier High School is excited to announce the hiring of Elliott Johnson as the Head Hockey Coach. Johnson is the program’s 6th hockey coach that started in 2003 and is currently the defending back to back SWOHSHL champions.
Coach Johnson has been with the St. Xavier Hockey Program for six years. He started as an assistant coach of the JV team from 2012-13 to 2014-15. The third and final year on JV resulted in the team reaching the JV Frozen Four in the 2014-15 season. The past three years he has held the same position with the Varsity team. Those teams accomplished back-to-back SWOHSHL League Championships in 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.
“We appreciate Kevin Taylor’s contributions to St. Xavier High School and his dedication to the hockey program and wish him nothing but the best in his new endeavors,” says Interim Director of Athletics, Nick Van Zile ’03. “We are very excited about the future of the Hockey program with Elliott taking over as he has been a vital part of the program’s recent success. Elliott has a great knowledge of hockey but, most importantly, has a great understanding of the hockey program and how our mission makes the ice an extension of the classroom.”
Coach Johnson is a graduate of Hamilton Southeastern High School (HSE) in Indiana, and the University of Dayton. He currently resides in Mariemont with his wife Meg, and they are expecting their first child in June. Coach Johnson is taking over for Coach Kevin Taylor for whom he says without none of this would be possible.
"I thought I knew hockey, and then I got to work with Coach Taylor. We will do everything we can to replicate and build upon the success he has led us to over his time with the program. I'm ready to get to work and win some hockey games." Coach Johnson would also like to thank Coach Tyler Styons for his contributions over their six seasons together and acknowledge the many sacrifices he made to get the program to where it is today.
