The Varsity Basketball Bombers opened a weekend of two home games on Friday night when they welcomed their GCL rivals, the Moeller Crusaders, to the Berning Gym.  The Bombers entered the night with a 13-5 overall record and 2-2 in the GCL South while the Crusaders entered with a nine game win streak and a 16-3 record and 4-0 in the GCL South.

In front of a sold out gym, St. Xavier got off to a good start as junior Nathan Stockman opened with two three point field goals for the Bombers' first six points of the night.  Moeller got off to the same start as they took the lead 8-6 with 3:14 left in the opening quarter.  Senior David Wassler connected on two free throws and senior Andrew Wittrock had a steal and a layup to give the Bombers a 10-8 lead.  The Crusaders scored with 9 seconds left in the quarter to even the game at 10 after the 1st quarter.  Senior Brandon Gilbert and Wittrock both scored for the Bombers early in the quarter but Moeller responded with two baskets of their own to keep the game tied at 14.  After that, the Crusaders scored the next 8 points to take a 22-14 lead before Wittrock ended the run with a layup for St. Xavier.  After that layup, Moeller scored the next 6 points to take a 28-16 lead but Stockman nailed another three pointer with just over a minute left that made it a 28-19 game at the half.

The Bombers looked to be hanging in the game as they won the third quarter 17-16 to make it a 44-36 game going the final quarter.  St. Xavier was led by seniors Chase Wolf and Bobby Jefferson who scored a combined 13 points in the quarter to pace the Bombers.  Moeller put the game out of reach as they opened the 4th quarter on a 16-5 run that put the score at 60-41 with 3:10 left in the game and went on to win by a score of 66-48.

St. Xavier was led by Stockman who scored 11 points and Wolf who finished with 10 points.

On Saturday night, the Bombers looked to bounce back as they welcomed the Walnut Hills Eagles to the Berning Gymnasium.  The Eagles entered the evening with a 15-4 overall record and 11-1 in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference.

St. Xavier opened the night by scoring the first 5 points with a Stockman lay up and a junior Luke Pellot three point field goal.  After two baskets by Walnut and a free throw by Wolf, Jefferson added a layup to give the Bombers an 8-4 lead.  That is when the Eagles kicked it into another gear as they went on an 11-0 run to close out the 1st quarter and lead 15-8 headed to the 2nd quarter.  The Eagles extended their lead to 17-9 but St. Xavier fought back as Wittrock scored on a layup and Wolf knocked down a three pointer.  The Eagles made one of two free throws before Gilbert threw down a dunk in transition to make it an 18-16 game with 1:06 left in the half. Walnut Hills scored out of their timeout but Jefferson answered with a lay up to make it a 20-18 Eagles lead at the half.

Walnut Hills opened the half with five straight points but the Bombers got four of those points back in one play as Stockman was fouled during a made three pointer and knocked down the free throw to narrow the deficit to 25-22.  Wittrock added a jumper to make it 25-24 but the Eagles scored the next three points to make it 28-24.  St. Xavier responded with a 6-0 run as Stockman converted an old fashioned three point play and Wolf knocked down a three point field goal to give the lead back to St. Xavier at 30-28.  The three pointer by Wolf was answered by a layup by the Eagles but Wolf got the lead back with a jumper of his own.  He then added a three pointer to make it 35-30 but Walnut Hills scored just before the end of the quarter to make it 35-32 heading to the final quarter.  The game stayed close in the 4th quarter as Wittrock opened the final quarter with a layup but Walnut Hills answered with four straight points to make it 37-36.  Wolf ended that run with another three point field goal to make it 40-36 which was followed by an Eagles dunk to make it 40-38 with 4:39 left in the game.  St. Xavier would finish the final 4:39 by going 10 for 13 from the free throw line led by junior Nick Frank's 5 for 6 to seal the 50-48 win.

Wolf led the way for the Bombers by scoring 17 points on 5 for 10 shooting (4-9 3FG) and he also dished out 3 assists.  Stockman finished with 11 points and finished 4 for 6 from the line.  Wittrock scored 6 points and Frank finished with 6 points all from the line.  Jefferson and Pellot each grabbed 5 rebounds to lead the team in that category.

The Varsity Basketball Bombers hit the road on Friday night for the second time this week when they traveled down North Bend Rd. to take on the LaSalle Lancers.  Both teams entered the night at 1-1 in the GCL South so it was a pivotal match up in the standings.  The Bombers stood at 11-4 overall heading into the night while the Lancers sported an 8-7 record.  Each team beat Elder while each team dropped their first matchup with Moeller in the GCL South.

In front of a sold out Bill Cady Court at LaSalle, each team took a little bit of time to get settled in.  LaSalle scored the first basket about a minute and a half into the game.  Senior Brandon Gilbert scored the next four points with a layup and a dunk in transition before another LaSalle basket to make it 4-4.  Senior Chase Wolf knocked down a three pointer to put the Bombers ahead 7-4 before the Lancers went on a 4-0 run to take an 8-7 lead. They stretched it to a 10-7 lead but St. Xavier bounced back with four straight points of their own on two layups from Gilbert and Wolf to take the lead 11-10.  Senior RJ Fredenburgh added a tip-in after he grabbed his own miss to make it 13-10 with less than a minute left in the quarter but the Lancers tied it with a three pointer just before the buzzer to make it 13-13 after one quarter.  The 2nd quarter started evenly as each team traded baskets with the Bombers getting theirs from senior Bobby Jefferson.  St. Xavier then extended their lead to 19-15 after two free throws from Jefferson and a layup by senior Andrew Wittrock.  LaSalle answered with the next seven points to take a 22-19 lead.  Gilbert stopped the run with a lay up but the Lancers added a lay up of their own to make it 24-21.  Junior Nathan Stockman came up with his first points of the night with a three pointer to tie the game at 24 with 2:19 left in the half.  A couple of possessions later, LaSalle answered with a three of their own to make it 27-24.  With less than a minute left in the half, Gilbert grabbed an offensive rebound and scored a basket while being fouled and completed the old fashioned three point play to tie the game at 27 heading to the locker room.  The Bombers were led by Gilbert who scored 11 first half points while Wolf scored 5 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.

St. Xavier took control of the game to open up the 3rd quarter as Wolf scored five straight points to give the Bombers a 32-27 lead.  After a Lancers' basket, sophomore Danny Greive, who started the 2nd half in place of an injured Wittrock, scored on a jumper to make it 34-27.  The Bombers lead was cut to 34-31 but they responded with a 7-0 run that started with a Jefferson lay up and ended with a Wolf three pointer with a Stockman jumper in the middle to extend the lead to 41-31.  LaSalle knocked down a three pointer which was answered by a Stockman lay up but the Lancers scored a bucket just before the buzzer to make it a 43-36 game heading to the final quarter.  LaSalle opened the 4th quarter by scoring the first three points but Fredenburgh took advantage of his size inside and scored the next four points to extend the lead to 47-39.  Gilbert added one of two free throws but the Lancers scored the next four points to cut the lead back to 48-43 with 5:14 left.  Stockman converted one of two free throws before a Gilbert lay in to extend the lead to 51-43 with 4:00 left.  The Bombers converted their free throws down the stretch as they went 7 for 10 and Fredenburgh added a tip in to seal the 60-53 victory.

The Bombers were led by Wolf's first career double-double as he finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds.  Gilbert ended with 15 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists while Stockman contributed with 8 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.  Fredenburgh finished the night with 9 points and 9 rebounds to lead the Bombers' on the inside.  Greive only ended with 2 points but played stellar defense on LaSalle's leading scoring Riley Haubner who struggled from the field going 6 for 19.  The Bombers' defense was up to the task all night as they only allowed the Lancers to shoot 34.6% from the field and 28.6% from beyond the arc.

St. Xavier improves to 12-4 overall and 2-1 in the GCL South which puts them alone in 2nd place behind Moeller who stands at 3-0 after the first rotation thru the six game schedule.  The Crusaders beat Elder tonight at Moeller by a score of 64-43.  The Bombers will now get some rest as they will have the week off from games before traveling to Price Hill to take on the Elder Panthers at The Pit on Friday, February 2.  Elder stands at 8-9 on the season and 0-3 in the GCL but they will be looking for revenge as the Bombers beat them 55-53 in overtime last Friday night.  The Panthers play at Roger Bacon on Tuesday night before next Friday's game.

The Varsity Basketball Bombers hit the road again on Tuesday night after their thrilling overtime win at the buzzer over Elder at home on Friday night.  St. Xavier traveled up I-75 north to Beavercreek, OH to take on the Beavercreek Fighting Beavers.  The Bombers entered the match up with a 10-4 record while the Beavers entered with a 6-8 overall record.

St. Xavier jumped out to a 7-2 lead as senior Brandon Gilbert started the scoring with a dunk in transition and added a layup on the book end of the run.  In between, senior Bobby Jefferson added a free throw and senior Chase Wolf hit two free throws to open the lead.  Beavercreek answered with a 6-0 run of their own to take an 8-7 lead but the Bombers bounced right back to score the final five points of the quarter to take a 12-8 lead at the end of the opening frame.  Senior RJ Fredenburgh made a layup and junior Nathan Stockman knocked down a three pointer to account for the run.  The Beavers scored the first 8 of 10 points to open the 2nd quarter to take a 16-14 lead.  Sophomore Danny Greive made a jumper to tie the game back up at 16 for the Bombers.  After Jefferson made two free throws to give the lead back to St. Xavier, the Beavers answered with a made layup to tie the game back up.  Stockman added a free throw and Wolf knocked down a three pointer assisted by Jefferson to open a four point lead at 22-18.  The Beavers added two free throws before a Jefferson layup to make it 24-20.  Beavercreek cut the St. Xavier lead in half just before the break by scoring with 3 seconds left and make it 24-22 at halftime.  Wolf and Jefferson led the Bombers with 5 points each in the 1st half.  St. Xavier shot only 36% in the half which prevented them from opening up a bigger lead.  The game was tied 3 times in the half and had 4 lead changes.

After Beavercreek tied the game up at 24 to start the 2nd half, St. Xavier started playing with a little more energy and went on a 7-0 run to take a 31-24 lead.  The run was started when senior Andrew Wittrock scored four straight points.  Stockman added a free throw and Jefferson scored a layup in transition after a steal before Beavercreek called timeout.  The Bombers then extended their lead to ten points at 37-27 after a Greive jumper with 1:48 left in the 3rd quarter but could not put the game away as Beavercreek scored the final five points to make it a 37-32 game going to the final quarter.  Jefferson opened the 4th quarter with a made jumper and Gilbert added a layup after a Beavers' basket to make it 41-34.  Beavercreek then went on an 8-0 run to take a 42-41 lead before Stockman stopped the run with a huge three pointer for the Bombers.  After the Beavers tied it at 44 with a layup, Wolf added another three pointer for St. Xavier to make it 47-44.  Beavercreek tried to keep it close as they answered the three pointer with a basket but Wolf knocked down another one on the next possession after Stockman tipped a rebound out to him.  Greive and Jefferson each added lay ups to make it a 54-46 lead leading to a Beavercreek timeout with 2:04 left in the game.  Wolf ended the game going 4 for 5 from the line and on his only miss, Wittrock came up with the offensive rebound, to seal the 58-48 win.

Wolf led the Bombers with 17 points on 3 for 6 shooting from beyond the arc and 6 for 7 from the line.  He also grabbed 3 rebounds and had 2 steals.  Jefferson scored 11 points on 4 for 8 shooting with 4 rebounds and 2 steals.  Gilbert and Stockman each scored 8 points for the Bombers.

The Varsity Basketball Bombers looked to get in the win column in the GCL South in their second attempt of the season when they welcomed the Elder Panthers to Berning Gymnasium on Friday night.  St. Xavier entered the evening with a 9-4 record overall after beating Lakota West on Tuesday night.  They dropped their first GCL South game at Moeller last Friday night for a 0-1 record in the league.  The Panthers entered the night 6-7 on the season and dropped their league opener to LaSalle on January 5 and stood at 0-1 as well in the league.

The Bombers started quickly as they jumped out to a 10-4 lead in front of a near capacity crowd.  Senior Brandon Gilbert started the scoring with a layup and added another layup during the run.  Senior Bobby Jefferson also scored four points while senior Andrew Wittrock added a layup.  Elder knocked down a three pointer but Wittrock answered with a two point jumper.  Junior Nick Frank added the final four points of the first quarter for St. Xavier to help the Bombers jump out to a 16-9 lead after the opening quarter.  Elder started the 2nd quarter with six straight points to cut the lead to 16-15 and the Bombers finally scored with 2:32 left in the period when junior Luke Pellot scored on an assist from senior Chase Wolf.  Wittrock added one of two free throws and then a layup to help St. Xavier keep the lead and take a six point advantage, 21-15, to the locker room.  Wittrock led the way for the Bombers at the half as he scored 7 points and grabbed 3 rebounds in the opening half.

He continued his career night as he scored the opening basket of the 2nd half which was followed by a layup by Gilbert to make it 25-17.  Elder did not back down as they went on a 7-0 run to make it a 25-24 game.  After a St. Xavier timeout, Wittrock scored again and Wolf added a three point field goal that was sandwiched by an Elder layup to make it a 30-24 Bomber lead with 3:45 left in the third quarter.  The Panthers cut the St. Xavier lead to three points but then were assessed a technical foul after a scrum for a loose ball and some shoving ensued.  Wolf knocked down both free throws but the Bombers could not convert on the ensuing possession to extend the 32-27 lead.  St. Xavier did hold the Panthers scoreless for the rest of the quarter and added 2 of 4 free throws to take a 34-27 lead to the final quarter.  Junior Nathan Stockman opened the 4th quarter with a layup and one of two free throws to make it 37-27 with 6:14 left in the game.  Elder then scored five straight points to make it 37-32 but Wolf added another three point field goal to put the Bombers back ahead by eight at 40-32 with 5:08 remaining.  Elder clawed back as they went on a 12-4 run to the end the game.  Senior Zach Harp scored the final seven points of the game for Elder as the Panthers tied it at 44 to force overtime.  The Panthers opened overtime by scoring the first basket to take their first lead of the night at 46-44.  They added a free throw before Wolf scored on a layup to make it a 47-46 Elder lead.  The Bombers came up with a stop on defense and Gilbert was fouled going to the hoop.  He made the first free throw to make it 47-47 but missed the second free throw but the Bombers came up with the rebound.  After Wolf missed a three, Jefferson grabbed the rebound and kicked it out to Stockman who missed a three but Jefferson grabbed the rebound again.  This time he took it to the hoop and was fouled.  He made the first free throw to give the Bombers a 48-47 lead but missed the second free throw.  This time Wittrock came up with the offensive rebound and scored on a layup to make it a 50-47 St. Xavier lead with 1:51 left.  Elder answered with a three point field goal to tie the game back up at 50.  After an Elder timeout to setup their defense, Wolf scored on a driving reverse layup to make it 52-50 St. Xavier.  The Panthers missed a three pointer and Wittrock grabbed the rebound.  Stockman took it hard to the hoop and missed on a reverse layup with 39 seconds left.  Elder could not convert on their possession as Jefferson rebounded the miss and passed it to Stockman who was fouled.  Stockman missed the first free throw but made the second free throw with 25 seconds left to give the Bombers a 53-50 lead.  On Elder's next possession, Harp made a deep three point field goal to tie the game back up at 53 with 6.6 seconds left.  Elder called timeout to set up their defense which stopped the clock.  Stockman inbounded the ball to Wittrock who drove the length of the floor and scored just before the buzzer to win the game for St.Xavier.  He was mobbed on the floor by his teammates in celebration and by both student sections.

Wittrock led the way for the Bombers as he finished the night with a double-double as he scored 18 points on 8 for 10 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds.  Wolf added 12 points on 4 for 11 shooting and dished out 4 assists.  Gilbert scored 9 points with 3 rebounds while Stockman grabbed 10 rebounds and scored 5 points.

The Varsity Basketball Bombers looked to bounce back at home on Tuesday night vs. Lakota West after dropping their GCL South opener at Moeller on Saturday.  St. Xavier entered the night with an 8-4 record overall while the Firebirds entered with a 3-8 record overall.

The Bombers started the game on a 7-0 run as senior Chase Wolf opened the game with a three point field goal and classmate RJ Fredenburgh added a layup.  Senior Brandon Gilbert capped the run with two made free throws before Lakota West got on the board with a layup.  Wolf and sophomore Danny Greive scored the next six points of the game by each making a three pointer to open the lead to 13-2.  The Firebirds responded with a 7-0 run of their own to cut into the St. Xavier lead and make it a 13-9 game.  Senior Bobby Jefferson scored the final five points of the quarter for the Bombers to extend the lead to 18-9 at the end of the opening quarter.  St. Xavier kept the defensive pressure on in the 2nd quarter as they held the Firebirds to 6 for 19 shooting in the 1st half.  That allowed the Bombers to extend their lead to 30-13 with 1:57 left in the half.  During the 12-4 run to open the quarter, junior Nathan Stockman scored 4 points while Fredenburgh, Gilbert, Greive and junior Luke Pellot all contributed two points each.  St. Xavier added four more points before the end of the half while Lakota West added five more points to make it a 34-18 halftime lead for the Bombers.  Wolf and Stockman each had 6 points for St. Xavier in the first half while Greive and Jefferson each had 5 points.

The Bombers spread the 2nd half minutes to everyone that was dressed after extending their lead to 50-26, their largest of the night, after opening the half on a 16-8 run.  During the knockout punch run, Wolf added a three pointer while Gilbert had a lay up.  Fredenburgh added five points while Stockman had a made jumper.  Pellot converted an old fashioned three point play while junior Nick Frank made one of two free throws.  The quarter ended with each team scoring 19 points as Lakota West fought back to make it a 53-37 game.  St. Xavier sealed their 62-47 win in the final quarter.

The Bombers had 11 of the 13 dressed players score on the evening led by Stockman who finished with 10 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists,  Wolf and Fredenburgh added 9 points and 2 rebounds each.  Gilbert finished the night with 8 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks.

The St. Xavier Basketball team headed into GCL South play with great momentum as they won three straight games averaging 75 points in the three games and holding their opponents to 48 points over the three games.  The Bombers stood at 8-3 overall but knew they were in for a tough challenge playing on the road at their rival, Moeller HS.  The Crusaders entered the evening with an 8-3 record as well with their three losses coming to very talented teams of Covington Catholic (KY), Long Island Lutheran (NY) and Imhotep Charter (PA).  Moeller went 6-0 in league play last year and looks to repeat as GCL South champions.

The Crusaders got off to a hot start and opened a 19-7 lead with less than minute left in the opening quarter.  Senior Chase Wolf knocked down a three pointer early to tie the game at 3-3 and after a senior Andrew Wittrock jumper to make it 8-5 Moeller, the Crusaders went on a 11-2 run to make it a 19-7 lead.  Wolf added another jumper and sophomore Danny Greive scored for the Bombers but Moeller also scored four points before the end of the quarter to make it a 23-11 headed to the 2nd quarter.  St. Xavier stayed in the game in the 2nd quarter as Wolf and Wittrock scored the first 5 points for the Bombers to keep the game at 26-16.  St. Xavier then went on a quick 7-2 run when junior Nathan Stockman started it with a jumper and Wolf followed with a three point field goal.  After a Moeller basket, junior Luke Pellot scored to make it a 28-23 game.  After two free throws for the Crusaders, Pellot responded with two free throws of his own to keep it at 30-25.  Moeller added a jumper but Wolf responded with another three point field goal to cut the Crusaders lead to 32-28.  Moeller finished the half with four straight points to open their lead to 36-28 at the half.  Wolf led the Bombers with 13 points on 4 for 7 shooting (3-4 3FG) in the first half.

Moeller opened the second half scoring the first 4 of 6 points of the half to open a ten point lead.  Wittrock tried to keep the Bombers in the game by scoring the next four points for St. Xavier but Moeller responded each time to keep the lead at 10 points.  Wolf knocked down another three pointer but once again the Crusaders responded and scored the next four points to get the lead extended to 11 points.  The Bombers showed some life as senior Brandon Gilbert and junior Nick Frank each scored baskets to cut the lead to 48-41 but Moeller responded to score the next four points before the end of the quarter to make it 52-41 after three quarters.  The Crusaders opened their lead even more the final quarter as they outscored the Bombers 23-11 to seal their 75-52 win.

Wolf finished the night with 19 points while Wittrock added 11 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists.  Stockman finished with 8 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists.  St. Xavier shot 41% on the night with 12 assists and only turned the ball over 10 times.  Moeller finished at 63% shooting on the night and scored 54 points in the paint.

St. Xavier started quickly once again as senior Chase Wolf knocked down three 3 point field goals in the first quarter as the Bombers opened a 16-5 lead with 1:57 left in the opening quarter.  The Knights fought back and scored the final four points of the quarter to make it 16-9 heading to the second.  St. Xavier extended their lead in the 2nd quarter by holding the Knights to 25% shooting in the quarter and outscoring them 18-6 in the frame.  Junior Luke Pellot scored five points in the quarter while classmate Nathan Stockman also added five points for the Bombers to open a 34-15 halftime lead.

The 2nd half was much of the same as the Bombers kept up their defensive pressure and outscored the Knights 26-6 in the third quarter.  Alter shot 16 percent in the quarter and turned the ball over seven times as St. Xavier extended their lead to 60-21 by the end of the 3rd quarter.  Junior Brandon Gilbert led the offensive attack for the Bombers in the quarter as he scored 13 points that included two dunks.  Alter outscored the Bombers in the 4th quarter but the damage was done as St. Xavier sealed the 71-41 win.

Gilbert added one more dunk in the final quarter before exiting with a game high 17 points on 8 for 10 shooting (1-1 3FG) to lead the Bombers.  He also added 3 rebounds and 3 assists.  Wolf finished with 16 points as he shot 5 for 10 from beyond the arc and added 2 rebounds and 2 assists.  Stockman contributed 10 points while Pellot finished with 8 points and 3 rebounds.  Junior Nick Frank scored 6 points and led the team in rebounds with 5 total and added 2 assists.

The Bombers had a full slate over Christmas break, playing six games, with five of those being league games. The Bombers started break with the Elder Christmas Tournament, which started the day after Christmas with the only non-league game over break. The Bombers faced Northern Kentucky. This game was hard fought, as junior James Winstel opened up the scoring in the first period. Northern Kentucky then responded with two unanswered goals. Then with little time remaining in the third period, senior Tyler Dellerman fired a slap shot past the Northern Kentucky goalie to tie the game and send it to overtime. The overtime was fast paced, with multiple chance for both teams. Junior goalie Bailey Hammons made a big save on a Northern Kentucky player left all alone in front. Senior Jack Langenderfer then buried a rebound opportunity off of his shot on a breakaway and the Bombers started the tournament by picking up two points. The Bombers had assists from Dellerman, freshman Nick Langenderfer, sophomore Noah Reidy, and senior Daniel Luongo.

The Bombers started their first of five league games in a row with a tilt against the Talawanda Braves. The Bombers got down 2-0 early, but that was just the beginning of this high scoring affair. The Bombers won the game 7-6. Senior John Driscoll had a hat trick, and the other Bomber goals came from freshman Zack Bohn, senior Neil Keyser, senior Kyle Archdeacon, and Reidy. Assists came from senior Nick Kaneps (2), Luongo, Winstel (2), senior Billy Johnson, Nick Langenderfer, Jack Langenderfer (2).

On the final day of the tournament, the Bombers were set to take on two league opponents, Sycamore and Elder. The first game against Sycamore was nothing like the Talawanda game, as the Bombers won the game 2-1 with goals from Driscoll and Bohn. Assists came from sophomore Jake Anding, Jack Langenderfer, and freshman Trevor Tiemeyer. The Bombers then took on Elder. This game did not end in the way the Bombers wanted, as they lost 4-1. The Bombers lone goal came on the power play, and it was scored by Luongo and assisted by Jack Langenderfer and Dellerman.

The Bombers then looked to continue their success into the new year as they took on Centerville. The Bombers did not play their best hockey in this game, as they managed to sneak by with a 3-2 win in a shootout. Bomber goals came from Jack Langenderfer and Kaneps. With Langenderfer’s goal being assisted by Kaneps. Keyser had the game-deciding goal in the fifth round of the shootout

The Bombers then faced the Alter Knights the next day. In this one, the Bombers looked to have knocked off the rust from the break over New Years. They won this game 8-0 with goals from senior Aiden Krueger, Driscoll, Bohn, Nick Langenderfer, sophomore Max Boulton, Dellerman, and Reidy. With assists from Jack Langenderfer (2), Nick Langenderfer (2), Kaneps (2), Archdeacon, and Krueger.

The Bombers improve to 7-2-1 in the league, and 9-3-2 on the season. They look to improve on the record with three non-league games at the Mark Rasmus Tournament hosted by Toledo St. Johns in Toledo. The Bombers play Upper Arlington on Friday at 8pm at the Tam O’Shanter. Then on Saturday, they play at 12:30pm against Toledo St. Johns, and 9pm against Dublin Coffman.

The Varsity Basketball Bombers enjoyed their second straight home game on Saturday night after playing six straight away from Berning Gymnasium to end the month of December.  They beat Shroder on Wednesday at home to start the new year and hosted Roger Bacon on Saturday night.  The Bombers entered the game with a 6-3 record while the Spartans entered with a 4-7 record after losing to Purcell Marian on Friday night.

St. Xavier jumped on Roger Bacon early and did not let off the gas pedal.  The Bombers scored the first 10 points of the game with senior Brandon Gilbert leading the way with eight of those points with a breakaway dunk to get the Alumni in attendance cheering loudly.  Roger Bacon scored their first basket of the night with 4:58 left in the 1st quarter and would not score again until 2:15 left in the 2nd quarter.  During that span, St. Xavier went on a 27-0 run to open a 37-2 lead after leading 21-2 at the end of the 1st quarter.  The halftime score ended up being 39-7 in favor of the Bombers.  Gilbert finished the half with 13 points on 3 for 5 shooting and 5 rebounds and junior Nathan Stockman also had 13 points on 4 for 5 shooting.

The 2nd half looked a lot like the 1st half as the Bombers led 56-18 after the third quarter.  St. Xavier kept up the pressure defensively and held the Spartans to 3 for 11 shooting in the quarter while the Bombers shot 7 for 10 to widen their lead even more.  Roger Bacon found somewhat of a rhythm in the final quarter as they scored 18 points on 5 for 11 shooting but the damage had been done as St. Xavier scored 17 points in the final quarter to seal the 73-36 victory.

The Bombers were led by Stockman who ended the night with 18 points on 6 for 8 shooting (2-4 3FG) with 3 steals, 2 assists and 2 rebounds.  Gilbert ended with 15 points on 4 for 7 shooting with 5 rebounds and 2 steals.  Sophomore Danny Greive finished with 7 points while seniors Andrew Wittrock, Bobby Jefferson and Chase Wolf each had 6 points.

The Varsity Basketball Bombers returned home for a game at Berning Gymnasium on Wednesday night for the first time since December 5, 2017.  That night was a win over Middletown to improve to 2-0 on the season and after six straight road games, the Bombers stood at 5-3 heading into Wednesday's game vs. Shroder.  The Jaguars entered the evening with a 3-7 record with wins over Gamble Montessori, Aiken and Turpin.

The game started out with each team trading baskets but the Bombers went on an 8-1 run to open a 10-3 lead with 4:18 left in the opening quarter.  During the run, seniors Brandon Gilbert and Bobby Jefferson each had 4 points.  Shroder bounced back with a 6-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 10-9 but the Bombers ended the quarter on an 11-3 run of their own to lead 21-12 after the opening quarter.  Junior Nathan Stockman got the run started with two free throws then a quick steal for a layup.  Junior Nick Frank and senior Andrew Wittrock each had layups followed by a three pointer from senior Chase Wolf with 55 seconds left in the quarter to seal the 9 point margin at the end of the first.

St. Xavier scored the first six points of the 2nd quarter with baskets from senior RJ Fredenburgh, Jefferson and Gilbert to take a 27-12 lead.  Fredenburgh added another layup and Gilbert converted two free throws to open up a 31-17 lead with 5:23 left in the half.  The Jaguars fought back and made it a 31-21 game before senior Nate Gleckler and Fredenburgh scored on layups and sophomore Danny Greive knocked down a jumper to open up a 37-21 lead with 3:33 left in the half.  The Bombers would extend that lead to 43-28 after Greive scored on a layup, junior Luke Pellot hit a jumper and Frank scored on a layup to make it 43-25 with 45 seconds left.  The Jaguars added two three pointers before the half, however, to cut the St. Xavier lead back to twelve, 43-31, heading to the locker room.

St. Xavier came out of the locker room with a focus on extending their lead and that they did as they outscored Shroder 20-10 in the 3rd quarter to extend their lead to 63-41 heading to the final quarter.  Fredenburgh had a huge quarter as he scored 8 points to help the Bombers extend the lead.  The St. Xavier defense held the Jaguars to 4 for 14 shooting during the quarter and outscored them 18 to 8 in the paint during the third.  St. Xavier was outscored 27-19 in the final quarter but the damage was already done.  Pellot helped the Bombers not relinquish the lead in the 4th quarter as he scored 15 of his game high 17 points in the quarter.  He knocked down two three pointers and converted an old fashioned three point play as well.  His second three pointer gave the Bombers their largest lead of the night at 78-55.  Shroder did not give up as they scored 13 of the game's final 17 points to make it a final score of 82-68.

St. Xavier only trailed for 23 seconds on the night as they were led by Pellot who scored 17 points on 7 for 8 shooting (2-2 3FG) and grabbed 4 rebounds.  Fredenburgh finished with 14 points on 7 for 8 shooting as well and had 3 blocks.  Jefferson had 10 points in 11 minutes played on 5 for 6 shooting with 2 rebounds.  Gilbert also had 10 points in 11 minutes played and grabbed 5 rebounds.  Stockman finished with 8 points in 12 minutes and led the team in rebounds with 6 and finished with 2 assists.  Greive finished the night with 6 points and 4 rebounds.

The Varsity Basketball Bombers won their first game on Friday night in the 2017 Newark High School Christmas Invitational against Licking Heights which put them in the Championship game on Saturday against host school, Newark HS.  The Bombers and Wildcats both entered the evening with 5-2 records on the season.

The game was a back and forth matchup throughout the night as St. Xavier battled through adversity of a decent home crowd.  The 1st quarter ended with a 14-14 tie as the game was tied 2 times and the lead changed four times.  Junior Nathan Stockman led the Bombers with 7 points in the quarter as each team held their largest lead at three points.  The 2nd quarter was much of the same as neither team could pull away.  Senior Bobby Jefferson had 4 points in the quarter while Stockman added two more points to tally 9 at the half.  Once again, neither team held a lead larger than three points and Newark took the 24-23 lead to halftime.

St. Xavier faced some adversity in the 3rd quarter as they fell behind four points on multiple occasions but always responded with a basket.  With 2:36 left in the quarter, the Wildcats took their largest lead of the game at 36-31 but before the quarter ended, Wolf knocked down a three pointer and sophomore Danny Greive added a lay-up with just over a minute left to tie the game at 36 headed to the final quarter.  Newark jumped out to a three point lead to start the final quarter but Stockman knocked down a free throw and Greive tied the game with a jumper.  With the game still tied at 39, Wolf buried a three pointer to give the Bombers their first lead of the half with 5:17 left in the game.  After two Newark baskets to take the lead back by one point, there was a scramble for the ball at the other end and Jefferson grabbed it and called timeout.  As he was falling to the ground, his elbow made contact with a Wildcats player and they called him for an intentional foul.  Newark took advantage as they made a free throw and then scored the next four points to take a seven point lead with 1:53 left.  The Bombers fought back and cut the lead to 50-49 after a lay-up by senior Brandon Gilbert and a three pointer by Chase Wolf with 19 seconds left.  Newark would make one of two free throws but got the offensive rebound on the miss and was fouled again.  They made one of two again to take a 52-49 lead with 6 seconds left and Stockman's last second shot from 30 feet fell short.

St. Xavier was led by Wolf who finished with 18 points on 7 for 12 shooting (4 for 8 3FG) and 3 rebounds while Stockman finished with 16 points and 5 rebounds.

Greive opened the 2nd quarter with a layup and senior Andrew Wittrock added a jumper after a junior Nick Frank free throw to make it a 21-10 lead with 6;28 left in the 2nd quarter.  The Hornets cut the lead to 21-15 but Wolf responded with a three to make it 24-15.  Senior Brandon Gilbert also added a three and a free throw to make it 28-15.  After junior Luke Pellot added a basket in the paint to make it 30-15 Bombers but the Hornets ended the half on a 5-0 run to make it a 30-20 game at the half.

St. Xavier outscored Licking Heights 14-11 in the 3rd quarter to open their lead to 44-31 heading to the final quarter.  Jefferson led the way in the quarter for the Bombers as he scored 6 points while Stockman scored 4 points in the quarter.
