The Varsity Cross Country team headed North to National Trail Raceway in Hebron, OH last Saturday for the OHSAA Division I State Championship Meet with a great season already in hand. They won the GCL Championship, the OHSAA Div I District Championship, finished third in the OHSAA Div I Regional Championship and entered the State Meet as the 6th ranked team in the State of Ohio.
The Bombers earned fifth place in the meet with a score of 209 points. This fifth place finish continues the streak of now 9 straight top 10 finishes in the state meet. St. Xavier was led by senior Peter Dauenhauer who finished 12th place overall (5 points) with a time of 15:53.6. Freshman Nathan Mountain was next in for the Bombers with a 72nd place finish (43 points) in a time of 16:41.1. Senior Jack Hands finished 77th overall with a time of 16:42.4 (48 points) while his classmate Michael Holly earned 80th place overall with a time of 16:42.9 (50 points). Rounding out the score of 209 was senior Jonathan Stansbury who finished 95th overall with a time of 16:49.2 (63 points). Other finishers for St. Xavier included sophomore Tommy Walters (126th place – 17:10.0) and junior Joe Doogan (180th place – 18:24.8).
The Running Bombers had a terrific year. They opened up the year with a huge win under the lights at the Moeller Primetime Invitational, where they set a tone for the rest of the season. The next week the Bombers B team took second at the Lebanon Warrior Invitational. The next Saturday the Bombers traveled up to Tiffin, Ohio to compete in one of the biggest meets in the state, the Tiffin Cross Country Carnival, where they took first place. After doing very well at Tiffin, they traveled down to Louisville, Kentucky to compete in another big race, The Trinity Invitational where they raced against some of the top schools from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, and North Carolina. They ended up taking second place in the meet, finishing behind Caramel (IN), who ended up winning the Indiana State Championships. The next week the Bombers B team raced at the Midwest Catholic CC Championships, earning a fourth place finish. The next Saturday the Bombers made the long trip to Rochester, New York, to compete in the McQuaid Invitational where they earned second place.
St. Xavier won the GCL Championship for the 7th straight season and all 7 of the Varsity bombers were either voted First Team All-GCL or Second Team All-GCL. Peter Dauenhauer (’18), Jack Hands (’18), Michael Holly (’18), and Jonathan Stansbury (’18) earned first team All-GCL, and Joe Doogan (’19), Nick Mills (’19), and Tommy Walters (’20) earned second team All-GCL. Dauenhauer won GCL Runner of the Year and Coach Andy Wietmarschen (’01) won GCL Coach of the Year.
