Senior Jack Heyob was the lone representative of the St. Xavier Wrestling program at the OHSAA Div. I State Tournament after winning the 285 lb. weight class at the OHSAA Div. I SW District Tournament. Heyob entered the State Tournament with a 41-1 record and looked to become the 4th individual state champion in program history. Previous champions included Joshua Robbins in 1990, Joe Heyob in 2014 and Cole Jones in 2015. The OHSAA State Tournament takes place at Ohio State University in the Schoettenstein Center each year.
Heyob opened the tournament with the 4th place finisher from the Hilliard Davidson District, Davis Gaylord, who is a senior at Westerville North HS. Gaylord entered the tournament with a 26-10 record on the season. Heyob almost recorded a pin at the end of the match en route to a major decision win of 12-1 on Thursday.
On Friday morning, Heyob faced Oregon Clay HS senior Nick Daly who sported a 32-13 record entering the tournament and placed 2nd in the Perrysburg District. Daly won his first round match with a 4:37 pin over a senior form Ashtabula Lakeside who sported a 30-5 record. Heyob stayed in control most of the match and recorded a 7-1 win to advance to the semi finals Friday evening.
On Friday evening, he faced the winner of the Hilliard Davidson District tournament, senior Jacob Cover from Hilliard Darby who entered the State Tournament with a 45-5 season record. Cover won his first round match by a score of 4-1 and then scored a 4:26 pin in the 2nd round match over a sophomore from Massillon Perry. Heyob did not allow a point in the match and took down Cover by a score of 7-0 to advance Saturday evening's finals in the 285 lb. weight class.
On Saturday evening, after the march of champions that precedes the championship rounds, Heyob took on Jordan Earnest. Earnest is a senior at Wadsworth HS and won the Hoover District Tournament. He entered the State Tournament with a 44-1 record on the season. Earnest won his 1st round, 2nd round and semi finals matches up to the finals with pins in times of 1:30, 46 seconds and 2:04, respectively. It was a very close match but Heyob ended up with 2nd place as he lost by a score of 2-1.
The 2nd place finish in the 2018 OHSAA Div. I State Championship is the highest finish for any Bomber since Cole Jones won state in 2015. It is the first runner-up finish since 2009 for the program. Heyob's season ended with a 47-2 record. St. Xavier finished the tournament with 19 points, all from Heyob, to finish tied for 23rd out of 70 teams represented.
