Varsity Volleyball Sweeps Weekend Road Trip

The Varsity Volleyball team headed to Akron, OH over the weekend to play three matches in two days against some of the top teams in the state.  On Friday night, they played at Archbishop Hoban who entered the match ranked as the number three ranked team in Division II.  On Saturday, the Bombers headed to Walsh Jesuit to take on defending Div. I State Champion St. Ignatius (#7 in Div. I poll) and host, Walsh Jesuit who was ranked number five in Division II.

The Bombers opened the weekend on Friday night with a convincing win at Archbishop Hoban by taking the match 3 games to 0.  The first game was a tight one but St. Xavier prevailed with a 25-23 win.  The next two games were dominated by the Bombers as they won game 2 by a score of 25-18 and game 3 by a score of 25-9.  St. Xavier was led by senior Brian Mauch who had 8 kills and 7 blocks while classmates Ryan Hilvert and Kevin McCarthy had 7 kills each.  McCarthy also came up with 8 digs while senior Henry Huber led the team in digs with 15 total.  Junior Leo Kastner led the way in assists with 33 and also came up with 7 digs.  Junior Will Connaughton contributed with 4 blocks and 6 kills.  Senior Jack Sorce had 3 aces and 4 digs while senior Steven Zelczak had 2 aces as well.

St. Xavier started Saturday with a 10 am match vs. St. Ignatius, who ousted them in the State Semi-Finals a season ago en route to the State Title.  The Bombers took out their frustration as they won the first game 25-12.  Game 2 went to St. Xavier as well by a score of 25-19 and the Bombers sealed the 3-0 win with a game 3 win by a score of 25-22.  McCarthy led the way with a .619 hitting percentage as he had 14 kills on 21 attempts.  He also contributed with 8 digs.  Mauch came up with 7 kills, 5 blocks and 3 aces against the Wildcats.  Huber led the way in digs once again with 17 while Kastner dished out 40 assists and came up with 6 digs.  Senior Ben Pung had 5 kills and 3 digs.

The Bombers looked for their 4th straight win of the 2018 season when they took on Walsh Jesuit on their home floor in the second match of the day for St. Xavier.  The Bombers rolled over the #5 ranked team in Division II as they beat the Warriors in three games by scores of 25-13, 25-8 and 25-14.  Zelczak led the way with 5 kills on 5 attempts and also contributed 5 digs and 1 assist.  Connaughton and Hilvert had 5 kills each.  Mauch had 5 aces and 4 kills while Sorce had 6 aces and 1 assist.  Huber led the way in digs with 9 and also had 1 assist.  Kastner led the way in assists with 24 and also had 3 blocks.  

With the three wins, St. Xavier improves to 4-0 on the season and now turns their sights to matches with Mason and Elder this week.  They travel to face the Comets on Monday, April 9 with a start time of 7 pm.  Mason stands at 1-1 on the season with a loss vs. Milford and win over Sycamore.  On Thursday, April 12 the Bombers open GCL South play with a trip to Elder with a start time of 7 pm.  The Panthers stand at 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the GCL South.  They have wins over Mt. Vernon, Fairmont and Lakota West with losses to Olentangy and Moeller.  The Panthers play at LaSalle on Tuesday before hosting the Bombers.
