The Varsity Tennis Bombers opened their 2018 season on Monday afternoon on their new courts that were built over the summer and finished during the fall on campus. They welcomed the Covington Catholic Colonels who entered with two matches under their belts already and a record of 2-0.
Sophomore Ronit Hiryur played first singles for St. Xavier and took down senior Max Cook by a score of 6-0, 6-3. Junior Max DeCurtins played second singles for the Bombers and recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win over senior Jack DeFrates. Freshman Charlie Temming wrapped up the singles sweep for St. Xavier as he took down senior Alex Schneider in third singles by a score of 6-0, 6-0.
The first doubles team of senior Joe Beischel and junior Nick Aronoff played a three set marathon match with junior twin brothers Benito and Cristiani Trojani but lost by a score of 6-4, 1-6, 10-9.
The second doubles team of junior Dominic Pham and senior Andrew Hendy also played a three set match but came out on top over sophomore Evan Gardner and junior Luke McHale by a score of 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-6.
St. Xavier starts the season 1-0 with the 4 to 1 win and will look to continue their hot start as they host the LaSalle Lancers at St. Xavier on Tuesday, March 27 in the first GCL South match-up of the season. The Bombers will look for their 51st consecutive GCL title this season.
