Varsity Soccer Season Ends on Tough 2OT Loss

The Varsity Soccer Bombers (11-5-4) traveled to Monroe HS on a night that featured steady rain throughout the match vs. Anderson HS (19-1-0) in the OHSAA Div. I Regional Semi Finals.  St. Xavier advanced after a first round bye and wins over LaSalle (2-1), Mason (1-0) and Loveland (3-2).  The Redskins advanced with wins over Withrow (9-0), Mt. Healthy (9-0), Sycamore (2-1) and Carroll (2-1) in double overtime.  The Bombers were voted as the #5 seed in the SW District while Anderson was voted as the #2 seed.  The Redskins beat St. Xavier earlier in the regular season at Anderson by a score of 2-1.

The 1st half was a back and forth match as each team created chances at the start but nothing that put a notch on the scoreboard.  The Bombers did start applying more pressure in the Anderson half of the field in the middle of the half and did earn 2 corner kicks that were cleared by the Redskins.  Anderson took its turn applying the pressure and found a good opportunity but senior GK Lucas Marshall was there for a save with just over 11 minutes left in the 1st half.  St. Xavier earned their third corner kick of the half with just over 5 minutes left in the half and junior Craig Wellens took the kick and crossed to the back post.  Junior Gino Geiser got a head on it back to senior Adam Arar who fired home a shot that found the back of the net to put the Bombers ahead 1-0 with 4:46 left.  The St. Xavier defense kept it that way until halftime.

The 2nd half started with a Bombers chance that found the crossbar and stayed out and then a  flurry of Anderson scoring chances which they finally converted with a goal with 33:15 left in the game to make it a 1-1 score.  St. Xavier responded with some chances of their own as junior Matthew Sutton had a shot sail just over the crossbar and senior Nick Bach had a shot sail just wide off of a corner kick set.  Marshall came up with another big save at the 13:30 mark to keep the score tied at 1.  St. Xavier kept the pressure on the Anderson defense but could not find the back of the net.  Anderson made a nice counter attack with 2:30 left in the 2nd half but the Bombers defense fought it off and kept the Redskins off the scoreboard.  Anderson then earned a corner kick with 1:18 remaining but the St. Xavier defense cleared and the Bombers offense created a counter attack chance but could not convert as the Anderson GK picked up the loose ball.  The game remained tied at 1 and the game moved to a sudden victory overtime period of 15 minutes to determine the winner.

The Bombers came out and controlled the tempo in the beginning of the sudden victory period but then Anderson counter attacked and earned a corner that the St. Xavier defense cleared.  The Bombers gained an offensive attack when senior Will Watkins attack and cross went past the goalkeeper in the box but there was no St. Xavier player there to finish it off with 12:00 left in the extra period.  Marshall came up with another diving save with 7:30 left in the first extra period to keep the game tied at 1.  With 4:39 left, Geiser was on the attack and was taken down from behind from 33 yards out which resulted in a yellow card for the Redskins but Wellens' free kick was scooped up by the Anderson goalkeeper.  The Redskins came back down and created a chance but senior Bailey Lach made a nice defensive play by blocking a shot and clearing it out of the Bombers' defensive end with 3:15 left in the first extra period.  Anderson created another chance with a corner kick with 15 seconds left in the period but could not convert to keep it 1-1.  The game moved to a 2nd 15 minute sudden victory period where Anderson scored with 12:35 left to take the victory 2-1.

With the loss, the Bombers end the season with a 11-5-4 record and advanced to the OHSAA Div. I Regional Semi Finals for the first time since 2014.  They finished 2nd in the GCL South with a 3-2-1 record and played one of the toughest schedules in the State of Ohio.  They won the 2017 Jesuit Cup, the first in school history, with victories over then #1 nationally ranked St. Ignatius and then Toledo St. John's.  The seniors had a great career and will be missed.  Those seniors include: Lucas Marshall, Charlie Stutz, Bailey Lach, Eddie Weber, Will Watkins, Nick Meyer, Josh Besl, Adam Scheidler, Nathan Iker, Conor Faulhaber, Adam Arar, Nick Bach, Nathan Neal, Marcus Bauer, Simba Mandizha and Andrew Warman.
