The Varsity Hockey Bombers opened up the regular season this past weekend with one league game and a non-league game. The Bombers opened up South West Ohio High School Hockey League (SWOHSHL) play against the Mason Comets. The Bombers jumped on the board early, as senior defenseman Tyler Dellerman fired a wrist shot from the point and it got deflected past the goaltender. The Bombers gained control early, and didn’t relinquish it, as they went on to beat Mason 12-0. The Bombers were led in goals by Dellerman, senior John Driscoll, senior Daniel Luongo, and senior Neil Keyser as well as freshman Trevor Tiemeyer, whom all scored two goals a piece. The Bombers were led in assists by freshman Zach Bohn and Driscoll whom had three a piece.

The Bombers looked to follow up their big win on Saturday by winning their game on Sunday against Bishop Watterson. Watterson jumped on the board first by scoring one in the first period, and another in the second period. The Bombers were trailing going into the third period 2-0, but that did not last for long, as the Bombers got on the board fourteen seconds into the period on a goal by senior Daniel Luongo assisted by Keyser. The Bombers continued to apply pressure to Bishop Watterson. This pressure resulted in a goal by Driscoll in four on four play. The Bombers did not relinquish on the pressure after that goal as they scored again when senior Jack Langenderfer won the face off back to Dellerman who took a wrist shot that deflected off the body of senior Nick Kaneps and went through the goalies five hole. The Bombers had taken the lead on three straight third period goals. Watterson went on to add another goal and tie the game. With under a minute left and the Bombers on the penalty kill, Watterson was able to get the puck out of the zone, Dellerman sent the puck back in, and sophomore Noah Reidy retrieved the puck and passed it out Langenderfer who put the shot on goal and had another chance but the goalie made a great save as time expired to preserve the tie.

St. Xavier opens the season at 1-0-1 with the win and tie and 1-0-0 in SWOHSHL play.  The Bombers look to take this momentum to Columbus as they will play in the Chiller Thanksgiving Classic on November 24 to 26. The Bombers look to win the tournament for the second time in four years. St. Xavier opens the tournament with pool play at 2:45 pm against Kenston on Friday, November 24 and continues on Saturday with games vs. Westerville Warcats (9:30 am) and the NW Eagles (6 pm). Sunday’s games depend on the results of pool play. The Bombers next league game will be against Centerville on December 3rd at Northlands Ice Center with face-off scheduled for 11:30 am.
