St. Xavier 3 - Centerville 2
The Varsity Baseball Bombers headed downtown to Great American Ballpark on Saturday, April 21 to play in the Reds Big League Weekend vs. Centerville. St. Xavier is only one of two schools that has participated in the event all four years which has grown since the inaugural year in 2014. In total, there were 5 games at Great American Ballpark with two games on Friday night and three games on Saturday. The Bombers looked to keep the winning ways going as they improved their record to 6-5 after a win Thursday over league rival Moeller. Centerville entered the night with an 8-5 record after a walk off win on Friday night which extended their win streak to six games.
Sophomore Wyatt Hudepohl got the start for St. Xavier as he entered with a 1-0 record, 2.56 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 13.2 innings pitched. He retired the Elks in order in the first two innings and then allowed a hit in the third inning before stranding the runner. He again retired the side in order in the top of the 4th to keep the game scoreless.
The bottom of the 4th is when the first runs were put on the board by the Bombers. Senior Tyler Dellerman drew a one out walk and then an out later seniors Nathan Kappers and Ethan Swink also drew walks to load the bases. Senior Brett Wissel came up with a single in the next at bat that scored two runs to put St. Xavier ahead 2-0.
Centerville bounced right back as they took advantage of a couple bad hops down at third base and a passed ball that allowed them to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the 5th inning. St. Xavier then took advantage of a Centerville miscue in the bottom half of the inning. After senior Ben Coffaro crushed a double to the wall in right field with two outs, Dellerman hit a fly ball to right center field that ended up dropping which allowed Coffaro to score to make it a 3-2 lead.
Senior Hunter Brookbank relieved Hudepohl in the top of the 6th inning. He walked the lead off hitter but then struck out the next batter after a stolen base. The next hitter hit a ball to right center field which senior Mitchell Deitschel sprinted after and dove to make the catch. He fired the ball back to the infield to convert a double play to end the inning. Brookbank retired the first two hitters of the 7th inning after the Bombers could not get any runs across in the bottom of the 6th. He was removed after giving up a two out single and junior Chet Larger forced a fly out to preserve the 3-2 win for his first save of the season.

Bottom of 3rd - After Edgewood scored 4 runs in the top of the 3rd to take a 6-5 lead, the Bombers fought back to tie it up at 6 in the bottom of the inning. Again, they did it with two outs as Larger was hit by a pitch after the first two hitters were retired. Larger stole second and Kirby drove him in with a double to center field.
Bottom of 4th - With the game still tied at 6, St. Xavier took advantage of some Cougars mistakes. Hundley reached on a fielding error to start the inning and then advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Grause singled Hundley home to take a 7-6 lead. Grause advanced to second on a wild pitch and then third on a flyout by Dellerman. He scored when sophomore Hank Thomas grounded out to make it an 8-6 lead.
Bottom of 6th - St. Xavier still led 8-6 thanks to Swink shutting down the Edgewood offense and the Bombers put the game away in the bottom of the 6th. Coffaro started the inning with a single. Junior Nick Albrinck pinch ran for Coffaro and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hundley followed with a double to center field to drive home Albrinck to make it 9-6. Grause followed with a single and Dellerman drove home Hundley with a single of his own to make it 10-6. Thomas walked to load the bases and then Wissel stepped up and singled to right center field to drive home both Dellerman and Grause to make it 12-6.
