THE 2017-2018 JOE QUINN AWARD WAS PRESENTED TO SENIOR SAM FALLON ON FRIDAY NIGHT DURING THE GCL SOUTH TRACK MEET.  THE AWARD IS NAMED IN HONOR OF FORMER CINCINNATI POST HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS EDITOR JOE QUINN AND THE AWARD IS THE MOST COVETED HONOR THE GREATER CATHOLIC LEAGUE SOUTH DIVISION AWARDS ANNUALLY TO A DESERVING STUDENT-ATHLETE.

THE JOE QUINN SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARD WINNER IS DETERMINED BY A POINTS SYSTEM THAT CONSIDERS A COMBINATION OF A STUDENT’S ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE, INVOLVEMENT IN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AS WELL AS PARTICIPATION IN VARSITY ATHLETICS.

EACH SCHOOL NOMINATED THEIR TOP SENIOR STUDENT ATHLETE AND SAM REPRESENTED ST. XAVIER THIS YEAR. HE IS THE SON OF ANN AND TIM FALLON.

SAM EARNED A PERFECT SCORE OF 36 ON THE ACT, IS RANKED IN THE UPPER FIVE PERCENT IN HIS CLASS, MAINTAINS A 96.3 GRADE-POINT AVERAGE, IS A NATIONAL MERIT FINALIST, AND SCORED A 50 OUT OF 50 IN THE ACADEMIC PORTION OF THE JOE QUINN SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARD CRITERIA.

SAM IS A THREE-YEAR VARSITY MEMBER OF BOTH THE BOMBERS’ SWIMMING AND WATER POLO TEAMS. A MEMBER OF ST. XAVIER’S PRESTIGIOUS SWIMMING PROGRAM, SAM WAS NAMED ALL-GCL SOUTH ALONG WITH BEING VOTED THE TEAM’S MOST IMPROVED SWIMMER HIS JUNIOR YEAR. THIS SEASON, SAM RECEIVED THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARD IN WATER POLO.

HE SERVES AS A BOMBER PILOT, IS A MEMBER OF THE ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND MATH CLUBS, IS A PEER AND WRITING CENTER TUTOR, AND PARTICIPATES IN SATURDAY MORNING SERVICE PROJECTS AT ST. XAVIER.

SAM PLANS TO ATTEND THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME THIS FALL AND MAJOR IN ECONOMICS AND PRE-HEALTH. HE IS CONSIDERING SWIMMING, CLUB WATER POLO AND MAYBE EVEN INTRAMURAL KICKBALL.

SAM IS THE FOURTH STRAIGHT ST. XAVIER STUDENT ATHLETE TO WIN THE AWARD AS MICHAEL VITUCCI WON IN 2014-2015, ALEX DETERS WON IN 2015-2016 AND SAM KLARE WON IN 2016-2017. HE IS THE FIRST SWIMMER TO EVER WIN THE AWARD FROM ANY OF THE SCHOOLS! ST. XAVIER HAS HAD A TOTAL OF 9 WINNERS OF THE AWARD SINCE ITS INCEPTION FOR THE 1976-1977 SCHOOL YEAR.
