It was a beautiful night for senior night as eight seniors and their parents were honored for their years of dedication to the program. Those eight honored were Ian Bryce, Jack Gartner, Jacob Huber, Andy Mills, Josh Neal, Ben Piller, Matthew Seltzer and Jack Sherlock.
The game vs. Elder started out with the Bombers dominating play. Nothing substantial was created until about 8 minutes in when Mills crossed in a dangerous ball that caused trouble for the Elder defense but didn't lead to a goal. 2 minutes later, sophomore Gino Geiser won a corner but it once again led to nothing. Junior Nathan Neal then had two shots where one of them was barely saved by the fingers of the Elder goalkeeper. Piller also added some pressure with a header that was once again saved by Elder off a corner. St. Xavier thought they had a goal at the 6 minute mark when Mills found his fellow senior Sherlock who then fired the ball in the back of the net, but the goal was discounted as the Bombers were whistled for offsides. The game went into the half tied 0-0. Elder got the first good chance of the second half but Gartner made a great 1 on 1 save to deny Elder. The breakthrough finally came when Geiser left a ball for Huber who found the bottom corner from range with a great shot. The team, especially the seniors, celebrated wildly with the large Bomber student section of the night. Mills then added a second goal after he ran onto a through ball and slotted it away despite the keeper’s touch. A few more efforts from X capitalized a great victory on their last game of the regular season as the Bombers came out 2-0 victors. My men of the match for the night would have to be all the seniors as they all played their hearts out to get a victory in their last regular season match as a soccer Bomber. St. Xavier finishes the season at 9-5-2 on the season and 4-1-1 in the GCL. Their next match will be on Thursday, October 20 at 7:00 pm at home in the 2nd round of the OHSAA State SW District Tournament as the team tries to make a run at the championship after finishing second in GCL.
