A beautiful night in Finneytown was kicked off with a win by the the St. Xavier JV soccer team over the Sycamore JV by a score of 3-1. After that the Bomber varsity team took the field against the Aviators. St. Xavier started off strong with a goal about four minutes in when junior Will Watkins found senior Andy Mills who controlled the ball beautifully and sent a little chip over the keeper to make it 1-0 Bombers. Two minutes later, St. Xavier threatened again as Watkins rattled a shot off the post. After nearly scoring five minutes before, Will Watkins capitalized on a defensive error from the Aviators and slotted his shot into the bottom corner for a 2-0 lead. The Bombers were off to a flying start. With thirteen minutes left in the first half Sycamore’s Noah Biegger pegged one back with a fine header to make it 2-1. The rest of the half finished off with a possible penalty for St. X that was waved off and then Will Watkins was denied by the Aviator keeper right before the half but the Bombers went into the break with a 2-1 lead.

Two minutes into the second half Andy Mills returned the favor to Will Watkins to score a tap in for his second of the night making it a more comfortable 3-1 lead for the Bombers. About a quarter through the half it was all St. Xavier as Scheidler and Watkins were denied twice by the Aves keeper. Sycamore then got their best chance of the half but it was squandered and it remained 3-1. At the 21:00 mark, sophomore Luke Rockwood found fellow sophomore Gino Geiser for a great goal to give the Bombers a substantial 4-1 lead. Not having a lot to do in the half, senior goalkeeper Jack Gartner made a fantastic save around the 11:00 mark to deny Sycamore a comeback attempt. With the game dying down Andy Mills and Gino Geiser added their second goals each to make it a final score of 6-1 to the Bombers and capped off a great St. Xavier victory. The man of the match would have to be junior Will Watkins who scored twice and assisted once as well as showing a hunger and work rate to try and score and do good for the team. The Bombers Soccer team will be in action again this Saturday at the Jesuit Cup at Walsh Jesuit against the hosts at 3:00 pm. Depending on Saturday’s result they will play St. Ignatius or Toledo St. John’s on Sunday at 11:00 am.
