The St. Xavier Lacrosse team was voted as the top seed in the SW Region of the 2016 OHSLA State Tournament after finishing the regular season 16-2. As the no. 1 seed, St Xavier earned the right to host the first four rounds of the playoffs if they keep winning. In the 1st round, they welcomed the Beavercreek Beavers who beat Oak Hills in a play-in game to advance to Wednesday night's game. St. Xavier took care of the 2nd year program easily by a score of 24-1 to advance to the 2nd round of the OHSLA State Tournament.
The Bombers welcomed the Lakota West Firebirds to St. Xavier on Friday night for the 2nd round. The Firebirds beat Lakota East on Wednesday by a score of 11-8 to advance. St. Xavier opened the scoring when senior George Thurner scored on an assist from sophomore Duke Alf to take a 1-0 lead. Lakota West answered quickly 45 seconds later to tie the game at 1. Senior Griffin Buczek scored when junior Josh Glaser found him on a nice run for the Bombers' 2nd goal of the game and a 2-1 lead. The Firebirds fought back by scoring the next two goals to take a 3-2 lead. However, the Bombers did not allow that lead to last long as Buczek scored on an assist from Thurner to tie it a 3. On the ensuing faceoff, sophomore Donny Stock won it and took it all the way down the field for another goal to make it 4-3 St. Xavier. Senior Jacob Lang scored two goals and Buczek added another one before the end of the 1st to make it a 7-3 Bombers' lead at the end of the opening quarter. St. Xavier added 8 more goals in the 2nd quarter while conceding only 1 to lead 15-4 at the half. The Bombers put the game away with 3 goals in the 3rd quarter to lead 18-4 and then 4 more in the 4th quarter to put the game away by a score of 22-5. Junior Zach Groene held the Firebirds scoreless while he was in there for the Bombers. St. Xavier's offense was led by Thurner who scored 5 goals and Buczek who scored 4 goals and contributed 4 assists. Lang scored 3 times and had 2 assists. Senior Mark Wallach scored 2 goals while senior Nick Pompelia scored 1 goal and had 1 assist.
St. Xavier will battle the Mason Comets on Tuesday, May 27 at St. Xavier Stadium at 7:00 pm in the Regional Semi Finals. The game was moved from May 28 to May 27 due to graduation ceremonies for St. Xavier. Mason defeated Elder 11-5 on Friday night to advance.
