The Varsity Tennis team finished the team part of the season with a great 20-3 record and ranked #5 in the State of Ohio according to www.ohiotenniszone.com. They won the GCL Title for the 49th straight time as well to help seal the All Sports Trophy for St. Xavier. On Thursday, it was time to turn their attention to the OHSAA Division I Tournament which is based upon individual play. The first step is the OHSAA Div. I Sectional Tournament at Sawyer Point which started Thursday and the Bombers qualified 2 singles and 2 doubles teams for the District Tournament as they all advanced to the semi finals of their respective brackets. On Saturday, it was championship day at the Sectional Tournament and St. Xavier did not disappoint. Senior Andrew Niehaus entered Thursday as the no. 1 seed in the Singles Bracket and won 3 matches easily to advance to the semi finals. In the semi finals on Saturday, he faced Caruso from Turpin and won 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the finals. On the other side of the bracket, freshman Max DeCurtins won his three matches on Thursday, including a win over the no. 3 seed, to advance to the semi finals. He faced the no. 2 seed Wendel from Turpin but lost 6-1, 6-1 and moved into the 3rd place match. Niehaus faced Wendel in the finals and took him down in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4 to win the Division I Sectional Singles Title. DeCurtins played Caruso to 3 sets in the 3rd place match but lost 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 and finished in 4th place.
In the doubles bracket, the Bombers' two teams were the no. 1 seed and no. 2 seed. The no. 1 seeded team of senior Waqas Tanveer and junior Peter Schulteis won both of their matches easily on Thursday to claim their spot in the District Tournament. On Saturday, in the semi finals, they faced the no. 4 seeded team of Lasky-Cinque from Colerain and beat them easily 6-1, 6-1. On the other side of the bracket, the no. 2 seeded team of senior Neil Bostick and junior Cameron Geoppinger also won both of their matches on Thursday easily to guarantee their spot in the District Tournament. In the semi finals, they faced the no. 3 seeded team of Muscatello-Novakovic from Turpin and played in a very close match. The first set went the Bombers way by a score of 7-6 but then the Turpin team won the second set 6-2. In the third set, it went back and forth but Bostick-Geoppinger were victorious 7-5 and won the match in 3 sets to advance to the finals to face their teammates. In the finals, Tanveer-Schulteis beat Bostick-Geoppinger in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to win the Division I Sectional Tournament Doubles Title.
St. Xavier Tennis swept the Singles and Doubles Sectional Titles at Sawyer Point and will look to do the same as everyone advances to the District Tournament at Centerville HS which starts Thursday, May 19 at 9:00 am. The semi finals and finals of each bracket will take place on Saturday, May 21 starting at 9:00 am.
