The Varsity Volleyball team is looking for a big season in 2016 with a new group of core players. After winning the GCL for the past 2 years, the new group wants to defend those titles and were tested in a big way on Tuesday night by opening the season at Moeller. It was quite the shaky start for the Bombers as they dug themselves in a 5-0 hole early in the first game, however, they responded with 7 straight points to calm themselves down. The first set went back and forth from there with each team making runs to keep it close. Finally, St. Xavier pulled away to take the 1st set 25-18. The 2nd set and 3rd set were very much back and forth as both teams stayed within a couple of points of each other. Moeller snuck away with both sets by scores of 25-22 and 27-25, respectively, and took a 2 games to 1 lead in the match. It looked like it would be an uphill battle for the Bombers being down 2-1 on the road in the 1st match of the season but they bounced back to take the 4th set by a score of 25-22 and even the match up at 2 games a piece. The 5th and final set took on the identity of the rest of the match with the score staying within a couple of points of one another. St. Xavier took a 13-10 lead but Moeller bounced back to tie it a 13. After a St. Xavier timeout, the Bombers scored two straight points to secure the 5th set by a score of 15-13 and win the match 3 games to 2. St. Xavier was led by senior Evan Bretl with 17 kills and sophomore Ben Pung with 6 aces and 11 digs. The Bombers were led in assists by juniors Cole Bretl with 23 and Thomas Roberts with 22.
St. Xavier opens the season 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the GCL. The Bombers will play next on Friday, April 8th when they open the home schedule at Berning Gymnasium against the LaSalle Lancers. JVB will kick the night off at 5:00 pm with JVA at 6:00 pm and Varsity starting approximately 7:00 pm.
