The St. Xavier Varsity Golf team won their Sectional Tournament a week ago by outlasting GCL rivals Elder and LaSalle by two strokes which put them in the later tee times in the District Tournament at Weatherwax Golf Course. The Bombers have been very successful on the Woodside and Highlands courses at Weatherwax this season as they won the GCL Championship held on the same course. St. Xavier sent out the same lineup as the Sectional Tournament with junior Zachary Pavlin as the #5 man, sophomores Cameron Frazier and Michael Prebles as the #4 and #3 men, respectively, and seniors Kirran Magowan and Domenic Maricocchi as #2 and #1 men, respectively. Magowan went into Thursday as the defending District Medalist as he won the 2014 tournament with a 73 and led the Bombers to the 2014 District Title after beating Moeller in a playoff. Moeller, the defending State Champion, seemed determine to get back to Columbus and avenge their 2nd place finish at Districts last year as they fired a front nine total of 148 on the Woodside course. The Bombers turned in a 157 after their front nine on the same course and were tied for 5th place at the turn. The top 3 teams from the District Tournament qualify for Columbus so the St. Xavier players knew they needed to turn in a great score on the back nine Highlands course. The Bombers were up to the task as Pavlin finished with a 38 on the back nine to start the charge and finished with a total of 78. Frazier followed up Pavlin's back nine 38 with a 38 of his own and matched his total of 78. Prebles came in behind them with a 37 on the back nine to go with his front nine 39 for a total of 76. Magowan rounded out the stellar back nine for the Bombers with a 2 under 34 of his own to go with a 38 from the front nine for an even par 72 total. After those 5 scores, the Bombers turned in a 147 on the back nine which gave them a 304 total. Maricocchi finished with a 40-41 for a total of 81 for a solid 5th score in case it was needed to break a tie. Centerville finished in 2nd place with a 310 total and Springboro finished in 3rd with a 311 total. Moeller finished 4th and did not qualify for State finishing with a 313. Magowan's 72 was the top individual score and he repeated as District Champion.
The St. Xavier Golf team will travel to Columbus next Thursday morning for a practice round before competing in the 2015 OHSAA Division 1 State Tournament on Friday, October 23rd and Saturday, October 24th at the Ohio State Scarlet Course. The Golf team will look to give St. Xavier HS its 50th overall State Title which would break a tie for the lead with Lakewood St. Edwards who also owns 49 total State Titles.
