The Varsity Soccer Bombers went into Tuesday night's matchup with the Elder Panthers looking to secure their 5th straight GCL Title with either a win or draw. A win would mean the title outright and a draw would mean a share of the title with the Panthers. The Bombers defeated Elder earlier in the year by scoring two goals in the second half of that match after being down 1-0 at the half and handing the Panthers their only loss of the season. That game was played within the friendly confines of St. Xavier Stadium on home field turf so earning a win or draw on the grass of the Panther Athletic Complex against a 10-1-3 Elder Panther team was a daunting task.
The first half of the match was much like every GCL match this season as it was back and forth with both teams not able to capatalize on any of their scoring chances. Each team in the GCL ended up tying one another in one of the two games against one another. The second half was not much different, however, Elder continued to place shot after shot on goal and junior Austin Ulm eventually found the back of the net with about 17 minutes left in the match to take a 1-0 lead. It looked as though the Panthers would win the game and with the win would be crowned GCL Champions outright. However, the Bombers fought back as they have done all year long and kept on the offensive attack. Finally, with 52 seconds remaining in the game, senior Zach Thomas buried the equalizer in the back of the net from the 18 yard line to secure the tie for the Bombers and a share of a 5th consecutive GCL Title.
St. Xavier finishes the season at 4-6-6 overall and 2-1-3 in the GCL play while Elder's record goes to 10-1-4 overall with one game to play and 2-1-3 in GCL play as well. This is the second time in three years the schools have split the title with it happening in 2013 as well. St. Xavier recieved the 6 seed in the Cincinnati Sectional and will host an OHSAA Division 1 Southwest Cincinnati 2 Sectional 2nd round game at St. Xavier Stadium on Saturday, October 24th at 7:00 pm. They will play the winner of the 1st round game between #18 Little Miami (9-2-1) and #22 Amelia (9-5-1) which will be played on Tuesday, October 20th at 7:00 pm at Little Miami.
