The St. Xavier Varsity lacrosse team had outscored opponents by a score of 68-11 throughout the OHSLA State Tournament going into Saturday afternoon's State Championship game against Upper Arlington at New Albany HS in Columbus.  The Bombers had already beaten Upper Arlington in the regular season by a score of 10-3 and were looking for a similar outcome in the finals.  However, Upper Arlington came out strong and posted 3 goals rather quickly to take a 3-0 lead early in the 1st quarter.  The Bombers settled in and responded with 2 goals of their own before the end of the quarter to trail only 3-2 at the end of one quarter.  Upper Arlington scored 3 more goals in the 2nd quarter and the Bombers could only get one shot to find the back of the cage giving Upper Arlington with a commanding 6-3 lead at the end of the 1st half.  St. Xavier came out in the 2nd half with a different attitude and shut down the Bears attack.  While junior goalie Alex Deters and the Bombers defense shut out Upper Arlington in the 3rd quarter, St. Xavier fought back to tie the game at 6-6 going into the 4th quarter.  With the State Championship on the line, the Bombers defense shut down the Bears attack again in the 4th quarter but the Bombers could not find the back of the cage until four minutes left to play when senior Jack Perez scored on an assist from senior William Holcomb to put the Bombers ahead 7-6.  Deters, the game's defensive MVP, came up with big save after big save and secured the last one as the time expired.  The Bombers won the 2015 OHSLA State Championship and finish their season with an 18-5 overall record.  St. Xavier was led by senior Jack Green who scored 4 goals.  Junior George Thurner, senior Matt Donnelly and the aforementioned game winner by Perez were the other goals recorded by the Bombers.  The game can be seen on replay on Time Warner Cable channels 311 and 1311 on Sunday, June 7th at 3:00 pm.  It can also be found on demand on channel 411 or visit for program updates and replay times.
