Novena of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Mary, mother of Jesus, cared for and guided Jesus as a boy.  She supported and joined in his travels and ministry during his life.  Mary also remained active with the Apostles and early Christians helping to support the early followers of The Way (as Christianity was known).

Mary continues to care for, guide, and support us, as well as to intercede on our behalf with her Son.

A novena is devotion as prayer spaced over nine days, engaging in specific prayers each day.  The practice originated with Mary, the Apostles, and disciples returning to the upper room and being united in prayer during the nine days between Jesus’ Ascension and Pentecost.  (Acts 1:12 ff)

The Solemnity of the Assumption of The Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated every year on August 15th. This feast commemorates the death of the Blessed Virgin Mary and her assumption, body and soul, into Heaven. It is the most important Marian feast, and it is also a Holy Day of Obligation.

We invite all members of our St. Xavier community to join in praying that this school year will be one in which we are all open to and aware of God’s voice and presence, and to receiving God’s Grace.

You can pray a novena individually in the midst of your day, with your family gathered, at Mass, or in whatever way fits your day.  We also invite you to join us for 7:30 a.m. weekday Mass at school during this Novena, if you would like.
