Outdoor Cincinnati Smale Park Smale Riverfront Park is intended to reconnect downtown to the river and to link with the existing riverfront parks to the east. It is a place to view the river and river traffic, gather and celebrate as a community, and be inspired. The park is divided into two primary levels. The Schmidlapp Event Lawn is part of the upper level and provides a green roof for the parking garage. The upper level of the park is above the 100 year flood. The rest of the park, the lower level south of Mehring Way, is within the floodplain. Pathways within the park are universally accessible with access to the water's edge. Daily Word Puzzle

I am writing in regards to one of your students at St. Xavier High School, Mr. Johnny Yost '23. Johnny is the son of Julie and Dave Yost, and since the Yosts are our neighbors directly across the street, we have had the pleasure of watching Johnny grow from a toddling preschooler to the fine young adult he is today. In all of our interactions over the years, Johnny has unfailingly shown himself to be a well-mannered, personable, considerate young man. His respect for his parents and his love for his sister have always been apparent too. Recent events have shown us just how selfless Johnny Yost is.
It is my understanding that your school's motto is "Men for Others". Johnny has embodied this through his actions, not just as words he hears at school every day. We asked Johnny if he would mow our yard, just mow it and don't worry about anything else, while my husband is ill. He takes great pride in maintaining our fairly good-sized corner lot yard - mowing, weed-whacking, edging, blowing the grass off the walkway - at least once a week, more often than not, twice a week. Knowing what an upstanding young man Johnny is, we told Johnny we would pay him whatever he thought was fair. Not too smart a way to conduct business, as a general rule, but perfectly acceptable where Johnny is concerned. Johnny Yost has several times refused payment and he has furthermore gone the extra mile and edged/weed-whacked/blown the grass off the walkways after he has finished mowing. He has put in several hours of work expecting nothing in return. Truly he exemplifies the "Men for Others" values you are hoping to instill in all your students, and I just thought you should know.
Sincerely, Sheryl (and Stan) Clay
Way to go Johnny! #MenforOthers Celebrate National Days! Thursday, April 9 National Cherish an Antique Day Almond Cookie Day St. Xavier Peek at the Past Construction on the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. began in 1848 after years of planning and fundraising. The giant obelisk commemorating George Washington would not be formally dedicated until 1885, however, due to periodic halts in construction caused by a lack of funds as well as the onset of the Civil War.
But what does this have to do with St. Xavier? In the spring of 1850, when construction on the monument was still in full swing, the students of St. Xavier donated $14.25 to help fund its continued creation. While a seemingly insignificant amount by today's standards, $14.25 in 1850 is the equivalent of $472.58 in 2020, which is admirable. In return for their contribution, the students received this handsome lithographed certificate of acknowledgement in December 1850: So, the next time you happen to be in Washington, D.C. and see the Washington Monument, remember that members of the Long Blue Line helped fund its construction. And that's pretty cool. |
