Friday, April 3 National Chocolate Mousse Day St. Xavier Peek at the Past For 129 years, St. Xavier resided at Seventh and Sycamore downtown. But time eventually caught up with the school, as its buildings and facilities were becoming outdated and overcrowded even by the 1940s. It soon became clear that if the school were to continue to flourish and fulfill its mission, it would need a new location.
Numerous sites were considered and rejected over the years: Amberly Village, North College Hill, Westwood, East Walnut Hills, Mt. Airy, Greenhills, and White Oak-Groesbeck, just to name a few. After careful consideration, property on North Bend Road was selected as being the best fit. There was ample space to build a new school as well as space for its own athletic fields, something the school had never had before. Furthermore, the Finneytown area was an up-and-coming suburb projected to undergo a population boom. Father John Benson, SJ, then the President of St. Xavier, officially purchased the North Bend Road property on April 7, 1955. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held on May 25, 1958, and the rest, as they say, is history. |
