Principal's Weekly Good afternoon,
May is here! Please encourage your sons to finish the year strong, despite the temptations of warmer weather and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. As always, if you have questions or concerns, please reach out to us.
If your current freshman, sophomore or junior will be taking an AP class during the 2019-20 school year, please know that they have until May 24 to drop the class. After this date, students will be required to remain in the class for the 2019-20 year unless extraordinary circumstances occur. Because of the popularity of our AP curriculum and the fact that we turn students away, we ask our students to make a full commitment to their choice. If you or your sons have any questions, please contact Jen Ziebol.
Tickets for the 2019 Prom go on sale for seniors next week. The Prom will take place next Saturday, May 11 from 8 p.m. - Midnight at Union Terminal. Please direct questions to Tim Banker.
We have a number of events worth noting for the coming weeks:
Have a great week,
Terry Tyrrell
Unique students are what make St. Xavier special. Each week we will highlight a variety of students and their accomplishments, putting a face to the wide breadth of talent and gifts to the idea of being you and belonging to the Long Blue Line. If you would like to share an accomplishment about your son, please email Becky Schulte, Director of Communications and Marketing, at bschulte@stxavier.org. Last month, the Mission Collection Club was able to present $2,500 to Winton Place Youth Center through the Magnified Giving program. Four representatives (Brady Terrell '20, Joey Brenner '20, Ryan Ray '20 and Jason Torrible '19) attended the donation ceremony and spoke about the great work of the youth center and how their experience volunteering there has changed their lives.
Leading up to the event, students discussed and researched organizations in order to award one organization with a grant from Magnified Giving. St. X currently has 60 students who volunteer at the youth center Monday through Thursday after school and 10 students who go to help on Saturdays. This past weekend, 41 sophomores biked the Little Miami Trail as part of their 2nd year retreat experience. Riding anywhere from 50-72 miles and camping along the way, these young men reflected upon the struggles and joys of this journey and how it mirrors the struggles and joys of the spiritual life journey.
One retreatant remarked: "For me, the best part of the retreat was getting out on the trail all by myself for a few miles, with no phone, just being quiet and enjoying the beautiful scenery around me." A big thank you to our four seniors and six faculty members who led the 8th and 9th installments of the biking retreat. Every year in the state of Ohio nearly 200 high schools sign up to compete in State Science Olympiad. In April, the top 40 from around the state are invited to Ohio State University to compete in the state finals. This years' St. Xavier Science Olympiad had their best ever finish at state in 14th place.
Fifteen high school students form a team and compete in 23 different events. These events range from traditional subject areas such as Chemistry, Physics, and Biology; to many STEM areas such as building musical instruments, Wright Brother style planes, weight bearing boomilevers, and vehicles powered by the potential energy contained in a single mousetrap!
St. Xavier received medals in two events: 4th place in dynamic planet (Austin Emmons and Gabe Paris-Ebdon) and Sounds of Music (Andrew Lu and Paul Jacobs) This year St. Xavier had 29 student participants in Science Olympiad of which only three were seniors. The future looks promising for this young team! This week, St. X. Robotics Team #4969, Robot-X, competed at the FTC World Championship Competition in Detroit, Michigan. The team put in extensive hours throughout the season, preparing them for this challenging event. After nine matches spread across three days, the team earned a record of 6 wins, one tie and two losses, ranking them in the top 25 out of 160 teams and placing them in the elite top 1% of the 2400 teams worldwide. Congratulations to team members Kush Dalal, Charles East, Evan Hall, Ben Sabo, and Sean Schnautz who attended and made the week fun and rewarding! Thanks also to senior John Shelton and freshmen Noah Burkhardt and Jacob Goode who unfortunately could not attend the event but are integral team members. And special thanks to Coach John D'Alesandro for his leadership to the team. Recently, Fr. Millbourn and students returned from The Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage route in northern Spain that Christians have journeyed for over 1200 years. 2019-20 student schedules will be created over the summer and will be available to view in PowerSchool in mid-July. As a reminder, every effort will be made to schedule students into primary course requests but alternates will be used when necessary. Students have until May 30, 2019 to drop requests for AP courses. Please see your school counselor or college advisor to drop an AP course request. Senior Prom Information Senior Prom will be held at Union Terminal next Saturday May 11 from 8 p.m.-12 a.m. Couples need to be at the Prom by 9 p.m. Tickets will be on sale during flex outside the AP Office all next week. Cost is $50 per couple. Choral Concert Tickets Now Available Come see the singing Bombers in our final choral concert of the school year. Deye, S.J. Performance Center. This year's guest artist is renowned trombonist Tom Brantley, who will be featured with the Phil DeGreg Trio and St. Xavier High School's Jazz Ensemble. The afternoon will begin at 2 p.m. with St. X grad Phil DeGreg '72 and his trio performing with Tom Brantley and Dr. Scott Belck, jazz department head at CCM. Following the opening performance, four local middle school and high school jazz ensembles will each have the opportunity to perform and receive comments from the guest artist. At 5 p.m., the afternoon will conclude with a performance by the St. Xavier Jazz Band joined by Mr. Brantley. Feel free to spend all afternoon listening to jazz or just a few groups. Regardless, it will be an afternoon filled with wonderful performances.
Tickets, which are $10 for adults and $5 for students/children 18 and under, may be purchased at the door the afternoon of the concert. All proceeds benefit the Michael Benson Endowment, which provides funding for the guest artists and scholarships for jazz students to attend the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop.
