St. Xavier Graduate Alex Longi named to Academic All-America team

GRANVILLE, OH (02/27/2014)(readMedia)-- Denison University senior Alex Longi was named to the Capital One Academic All-America second-team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Longi is one of just 15 Division III men's basketball players in the nation to receive this honor.

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio and a graduate of St. Xavier High School, Longi was a four-year starter for the Big Red who boasts a 3.98 grade point average while majoring in economics and minoring mathematics. A two-time Capital One Academic All-District selection, Longi enjoyed his best season on the hardwood for the Big Red. He averaged 15.2 ppg, 6.0 rpg, and 3.3 apg during his senior year. Longi scored in double figures 21 times highlighted by equaling his career-high 26 points against No. 13 Wittenberg on Dec. 14.

On Feb. 8, Longi became the 20th player in Denison history to score 1,000 career points. He leaves Denison with 1,090 career point, which is tied for 16th on the Big Red scoring list. Last season, he was named to the All-North Coast Athletic Conference second team after averaging 11.2 ppg.

A two-time honoree at Denison's annual Top-50 Student-Athlete Awards Banquet, Longi is also a two-time recipient of the Ted Barclay Top-5 Award, presented annually to the five Denison student-athletes with the highest grade point average across DU's 23 varsity sports. Longi's 3.98 GPA was tied with three others as the best among this year's Academic All-America selections. He was a two-time NCAC Player of the Week, and was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Academic Honors Court in 2013.

Dating back to 1967, Longi is the 69th Academic All-America selection from Denison University. He is also the sixth individual from the men's basketball program to receive this prestigious honor.
