OMEA district 14 honor band festival at Princeton high school

The District 14 Honor Bands are groups comprised of students from all schools located within the Ohio Music Educators Associations designated District 14 area. This area is encompassing all of Cincinnati and some of the surrounding school districts. For example, the student selected competed against students from Sycamore, Indian Hills, Walnut Hills, Milford, Princeton, West Clermont, Loveland, Anderson, Turpin, Oak Hills, Colerain, Goshen, Summit Country Day, Reading, Moeller, and Mount Notre Dame. These were the other schools that had students selected. Other schools in the area did not have students selected.

Students prepare music selected by the District Band Directors Association. Each instrument must perform the same pieces of music, scales, and sight-reading selections. Judges will listen to every player on their assigned day and select the top performers on each instrument. The students selected to the honor bands meet and rehearse with a guest conductor to prepare for a concert presented to the public. The groups practice on a Tuesday evening, Friday evening, Saturday during the day, then present the concert Sunday afternoon at Princeton High School. These groups are called concert bands or symphonic bands. They are given this title based on the music literature they practice and perform.

Eight young men auditioned and four were selected to the bands. Two boys were selected to the Concert Band and two were selected to the Symphonic Band.

St. Xavier Director of Bands, Dr. Besse draws the comparison to an athlete being selected to an All-District Team. This year nearly four hundred high school students auditioned to be selected to these groups.
