Ecology Summit

Last week some students and faculty attended the Ignatian Solidarity Network Student Ecology Summit in California.  The Ecology Summit was the first Student-focused Ecology Summit held by the Ignatian Solidarity Network.  It began with a tour of Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland, CA, which has an amazing Ecology Program.  From Bishop O'Dowd, we headed down to Mt. Hermon, CA outside Santa Cruz where we attended the 2-day summit.  There were about 35 students participating, plus chaperones, from over 7 schools represented.  The students explored ways in which they could foster a greater ecological awareness in their various school communities while forging connections with students from across the country.  Using gratitude-based learning, students were introduced to communication skills that will help them listen to various constituents in their particular schools so that the school community can make more effective decisions about environmental practices that work for the whole community.  Students were challenged to map out a goal/vision that they will then pursue in the following year, utilizing their new skills to shape a successful path forward.
