Since its inception in 1972, the St. Xavier Swimming and Diving program has captured the Cincinnati Sectional of the SW Ohio District each year.  This season’s effort garnered 709.5 points to outpace Elder (312), Talawanda (285), Oak Hills (285) and six other schools.  The District is divided into 5 sectionals with the fastest 32 swimmers and 24 relays moving on to Districts next Saturday at Miami.  Diving will be held Tuesday, February 12, with St. X represented by Ben Cutforth (JR), Will Behimer (SO) and Andrew Neyer (SR).

The Long Blue Lane qualified the maximum number of swimmers and relay (32 individuals – 3 relays).  The squad showed quality and depth notching wins in ten of eleven events with top 5 finishes in every swim.  Clean sweeps (1 – 4) were registered in 200 Free, 200 IM, 100 Free, 500 Free and 100 Breast.  The team will be aiming for its 56th District crown (51st consecutive) and ultimately a trip to Canton for the Ohio Championships.

Leading the way at Sectionals were Owen Taylor (SO) who went 4 for 4 in the win column [200 Medley Relay, 500 Free, 100 Free, 400 Free Relay] and was joined by Jean-Pierre Khouzam (JR) [200 Medley Relay, 100 Fly, 200 Free Relay, 400 Free Relay].  Other multiple winners were Ian Van Gorp (JR) [200 Free, 200 Free Relay, 400 Free Relay], Jon Bernard (SR) [200 IM, 400 Free Relay], Scott Sobolewski (JR) [200 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay, 100 Breast].  Kellen Roddy (JR) rounded out the winner circles with a superlative effort in the 500 Free.  Other relay winners were Nate Buse (JR) [200 Medley Relay] and John Paul Khouzam (SR) [200 Free Relay].

The fastest times in history were required in the 100 Free, 100 Back and 100 Brest to qualify for District.

“Advancing to the District meet was our objective; please to report that was accomplished.  We continue to train and compete with focus and intensity.  But our journey is far from complete,” commented head coach Tim Beerman.

“The guys handled themselves very well.  Sectionals can be a real challenge as we are in our early phase of tapering .  Nice to be moving on with a motivated group of athletes,” concluded assistant head coach Jim Brower.
