Bomber Golfers Win Runner-Up State Championship

Usually a score of 313 in a state tournament on a 7,000 yard course in windy, miserable weather will easily win any day. Last year, the Bombers shot a 331 and 322 and won the state title. However, the Bombers’ 313 this year (in a one-day rain-shortened event) finished behind an astonishing 309 by Columbus’s St. Charles, who won the State championship on Saturday afternoon. Nevertheless, the Bomber Golf squad showed an outstanding performance, and became runner-up state champs.
After St. X won the State championship last year, there were concerns about whether or not this year’s team could get the job done, after losing last year’s seniors. But at the end of the season, they proved that they had as much fight as anyone.
“We weren’t expected to make it this far, and to become runner-up state champs is a great accomplishment for this team,” said head coach Brian Shircliff. “These men have worked so hard this season and they have proven to us all that anything is possible! I am really proud of them.”
George Rohde and Colin Stelljes led the way on Saturday, both shooting exceptional 76’s and making the Second Team All-State. Junior Smith Brinker fired an excellent 80, which was followed by a solid 81 from Austin Estes and a fine 82 from Carl Schlotman.
Harsh winds, cold temperatures, and light rain pounded the Scarlet Course as the golfers battled. The first day of the tournament was cancelled due to heavy rain, so this year’s tournament was condensed into only 18 holes.
The Bombers won the Sectional Tournament at Miami Whitewater two weeks ago, and they also won the District Tournament last week at Weatherwax.
