Men for & with Others

Companion Scholars Program

The Companion Scholars Program (CSP) is an academic enrichment program developed by St. Xavier High School for selected young men in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades  from various Cincinnati area schools.  Only students in seventh and eighth grades are eligible to participate in the summer component; sixth graders enrolled at AMIS, Corryville Catholic and Winton Hills Academy are eligible for the academic year component.

Mission
The primary mission of the program is to prepare non-traditional middle school students with the academic and social skills necessary to succeed in the academically rigorous college preparatory curriculum at St. Xavier High School.

St. Xavier High School
The High School is a college preparatory school that is Catholic and Jesuit in its tradition and outlook.  Its mission is to provide an education that includes religious formation as well as preparation for college.  Its essential activity is the interaction of students, faculty and administrators in a learning experience shaped by the educational principles of its Catholic and Jesuit heritage.

CSP academic year component (6th, 7th, 8th graders)

  • Program students receive academic tutoring throughout the day at their middle schools by St. Xavier High School students.  In some cases, Program students may be required to attend after-school tutoring provided by St. Xavier High School.
  • Each Program student is paired with a St. Xavier student as an academic and social mentor throughout his tenure in the Companion Scholars Program.
  • Program students attend St. Xavier High School one day per month (Academic Days) to meet with their mentor(s) and to experience the academic and social cultures of the school.
  • Program students attend one St. Xavier function (i.e. football, basketball, theatre) monthly with their mentor(s).
  • Program students attend one Saturday recreational activity per quarter with their mentor(s).

CSP summer component (7th and 8th graders)
The academically rigorous four-week summer program, taught by St. Xavier teachers, follows a basic structure:

  1. Mornings consist of three academic classes taught be St. Xavier faculty in the areas of math, ethics and English.
  2. Afternoons consist of a study skills session, an elective course, along with a recreational period.
  3. The full fourth week of the program is designated “Experiential Learning.”  Students have the opportunity to be "challenged by choice" in various teamwork and gaming initiatives along with a variety of off-campus activities.

CSP parent component

  • Parents will participate in quarterly seminars/workshops on various issues pertinent to education, specifically as it relates to private school education.
  • Parents will meet twice a year with the student’s academic advisor/counselor.
