Varsity Soccer Season Recap

by: Head Coach Brian Schaeper

The 2017 season saw the Bombers win the Jesuit Cup and District Championships. Notable wins included defeating the three time defending state champion St. Ignatius 4-2, district champion Centerville 4-0, and always formidable Mason twice. St. Xavier saw its tournament run come to a close in the round of 16 in a 2-1 double overtime loss. The season was not all smooth sailing, as St. Xavier was challenged by the toughest teams in the City and state. It took some time to find the right lineup and come together to play as one unit. At one point the team had a record of 2-3-4, but the work paid off as the bombers finished the season winning 9 of their last 11 games. That second half of the season shows why 2017 was a success – the team got better. At St. Xavier success is defined by growth, and 2017 was a season of growth:

  1. Players got better. There were great individual stories in the 2017 season, like senior Adam Arar who went from being a JV sub the year before to a varsity starter who anchored the middle of the field.
  2. Players developed essential person traits, like leadership and work ethic. Senior Bailey Lach, a talented soccer player committed to Wright State University, took on a new role as center back and led the team as a senior captain. Senior co-captain Will Watkins willed the team to success through his example of maximum effort every time he stepped on the field.
  3. The team came together and learned to be a part of something bigger than themselves. The success on the field was due in large part to their work off the field to develop close friendships with each other. Near the end of the season Senior co-captain and goalkeeper Lucas Marshal spoke to the program about the brotherhood he discovered through St. Xavier Soccer.

So when players get better on and off the field and a unified team is formed, it makes for a great journey. Such was the 2017 soccer season for the St. Xavier Soccer Bombers.

The program thanks the 2017 soccer seniors (Class of 2018) and their parents for their contributions to the program.  Those seniors include: Lucas Marshall, Charlie Stutz, Bailey Lach, Eddie Weber, Will Watkins, Nick Meyer, Josh Besl, Adam Scheidler, Nathan Iker, Conor Faulhaber, Adam Arar, Nick Bach, Nathan Neal, Marcus Bauer, Simba Mandizha and Andrew Warman.
