The 2017 St X Water Polo team concluded its 7th season on October 28, 2017, with a 3rd place finish at the Ohio High School State Championships. While the team’s streak of consecutive state championships was snapped, they finished in the top 3 in Ohio for the 5th straight year. And no team has won more state titles during that time. There were several other highlights to the season. All 7 varsity starters (Charley Heyd, Nicholas Czepukaitis, Liam Roberts, Carter Dwyer, Christopher Tarvardian, Alex Wade, and Sam Fallon) were voted by the coaches as 1st Team, 2nd Team, or Honorable Mention All-State. That is a first in Ohio. Led by those 7, the Team won the mid-season Ohio Cup for the first time in program history and travelled to Coronado, California for a 32 team tourney that featured nationally ranked teams from California, Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest. In their California tourney, the Bombers finished with a 3-3 record, dropping 2 games by just 1 goal. The Varsity team lost only 1 game to an in state opponent this season in tallying a 25-9-1 record. Altogether, the Varsity, JV, and Freshman teams had 59 total players – one of the largest high school teams in the country. And in September the team hosted a 27 team tourney at Coney Island which included teams from Michigan, Tennessee, and Illinois and which is becoming one of the top High School tournaments in the Midwest.
The seniors had a tremendous career while at St. Xavier as they helped build the program to its size today. They finished as State Champions in 2015 and 2016 and finished third in 2017. Those seniors include: Teddy Bayer, JR, Nick Czepukaitis, Carter Dwyer, Sam Fallon, Kevin Heller, Charlie Heyd, Scott Holcomb, Michael Lopez, Will Osterman, Luke Prather, Liam Roberts, Chris Tarvardian, and Alex Wade.
