The Bombers will open the 2017 campaign as defending OHSAA Div. I State Champions and play in the opening weekend Skyline Crosstown Showdown event for the 19th season. St. Xavier holds a 15-3 record in the event over their 18 appearances and will face Hinsdale Central HS from Hinsdale, IL on Saturday, August 26 at 5:00 pm. This year, the game will be played at Princeton High School as Nippert Stadium is unavailable due to new NCAA rules. St. Xavier will hit the road in Week 2 for their annual rivalry game vs. Colerain HS at Colerain Stadium on Friday, September 1 at 7 pm. The Bombers and Cardinals played an overtime game at St. Xavier in Week 2 of last season with Colerain winning 20-14 and also played a double overtime game in the playoffs with the Bombers winning 29-23 on their way to a State Title. The two teams have met for the past 6 regular seasons and have met in the playoffs the past 6 out of 7 years in the playoffs.
The Bombers open their home schedule on Friday, September 8 at 7 pm when they host the Walnut Hills Eagles. Walnut Hills makes the transition from Division 2 to Division 1 this year due to the new OHSAA competitive balance initiative. The Eagles have multiple student athletes with college offers for 2018 and 2019 as they are coming off of a 4-6 season in 2016.
St. Xavier stays at home in Week 4 when they welcome the Cathedral HS Irish to Ballaban Field on Friday, September 15 at 7pm. The Bombers look to extend their 5 game winning streak against the Irish. Last year's game went back and forth before St. Xavier finally sealed the 34-29 win in Week 4 at Butler University.
The Bombers open GCL South play on the road at Lockland Stadium to take on the Moeller Crusaders in Week 5 on Friday, September 22 at 7 pm. St. Xavier has won the rivalry game the previous two years by scores of 14-10 in 2015 and 21-14 in 2016.
GCL South play continues when St. Xavier welcomes Elder and LaSalle to Ballaban Field in Weeks 6 and Weeks 7, respectively. The Panthers of Elder play at St. Xavier on Friday, September 29 at 7 pm as each team has won on the road the past 5 seasons with the Bombers winning at home in 2011 by a score of 21-6. The LaSalle Lancers travel down North Bend Rd for their game at St. Xavier on Friday, October 6 at 7 pm. The Lancers come in as the defending OHSAA Div. 2 State Champions. Senior night will take place on Friday, October 13 when St. Xavier welcomes Football North from Ontario, Canada for a 7 pm game at St. Xavier stadium. It will be a nice break for the Bombers after traveling to Indianapolis every other year in Week 8 and get to experience playing a team from a different country.
St. Xavier hits the road for the final two weeks of the season as they start with Cleveland St. Ignatius on Saturday, October 21 at Byers Field in Parma, OH. The game will kick off at 3 pm and is a rematch of the 2016 OHSAA Div. I State Championship game from December. The Bombers and Wildcats met in the regular season with St. Ignatius winning 31-14. They then met in the title game where St. Xavier claimed the title with a 27-20 double overtime victory.
The final week of the season has the Bombers heading to Louisville St. Xavier for a 7:30 game on Friday, October 27 at Br. Thomas Moore Page Stadium on the campus of Lou. St. Xavier high school. The Bombers and Tigers have met the past 8 years with the Bombers holding a 6-2 record.
Season ticket holders will have first rights to tickets if St. Xavier finishes high enough to host a home playoff game in the 1st round of the OHSAA Div. I State Tournament.
