The Varsity Lacrosse team finished the regular season as the #1 ranked team in the Midwest according to LaxPower.com power rankings and cruised in their Regional Qualifying game against Walnut Hills by a score of 27-1. They looked to keep it rolling as they hosted Lakota West on Saturday for the OHSAA Div. I Regional Quarter Finals. The Firebirds entered the game with a 13-5 overall record and defeated Elder in their Regional Qualifying game by a score of 11-8.
The Bombers got on the scoreboard first with 7:25 left in the 1st quarter when junior Johnny Marrocco scored to make it 1-0. About 3 minutes later, junior Jack Kiloil scored to make it a 2-0 St. Xavier lead. Lakota West responded with a goal less than 30 seconds later to make it 2-1 and then tied the game up at 2 with 2:47 left in the quarter with another goal. St. Xavier opened the 2nd quarter quickly as they scored four goals in the first 2 minutes. Kilfoil scored again on an assist from junior Duke Alf with 11:39 left while Marrocco scored his second goal of the day with 10:55 left. 5 seconds later, junior Donny Stock won the faceoff and took it all the way into the Firebirds' offensive zone and found the back of the cage to make it 5-2. Then 8 seconds later, junior Nick Shamsi scored to make it a 6-2 game with 10:42 left in the 1st half. About 4 minutes later, Kilfoil recorded his hat trick on the day with his third goal on an assist from senior Anthony Longi to make it 7-2. The Firebirds fought back to score two more goals to narrow their deficit to 7-4 but junior Chad Adair responded to make it 8-4 with 7:09 left in the half. Lakota West scored 11 seconds later and then capitalized on a St. Xavier penalty to get it to an 8-6 game with 5:43 left in the 1st half. The Bombers responded with two goals before the end of the half with both of them coming from senior Joe Goslee. He scored the first one on an assist from senior Caleb Anderson with 4:12 left and his second one came with just 6 tenths of a second left in the half to make it a 10-6 St. Xavier lead at halftime.
Lakota West came out and scored the first goal of the 2nd half after another Bomber penalty to make it a 10-7 game but that would be as close as they could get. St. Xavier scored 15 unanswered goals to end the game. Kilfoil scored four more goals to make it 7 goals on the game. Marrocco scored three more goals to make it 5 total on the game for him. Junior John Holcomb score three goals while Anderson added two goals. Alf, junior Matthew Fox and senior Bates Crowther all added goals as well to seal the 25-7 victory.
With the win, St. Xavier improves their overall record to 16-4 on the season. They advance to the OHSAA Division I Regional Semi Finals where they will host Milford HS on Tuesday, May 23 at 7:30 pm at St. Xavier Stadium. The Eagles have advanced with wins over Oak Hills (17-2) and Loveland (13-10). The Bombers beat Milford in the opening game of the season by a score of 22-5.
