The Varsity Tennis team enjoyed a very successful season as a team as they finished the season at 19-3 overall. They won the program's 50th consecutive GCL South Title and advanced to the OTCA Regional Semi Finals. The team portion of the schedule is now over and the postseason play turns to the OHSAA Division I Sectional Tournament which is individual based.
St. Xavier sent freshman Ronit Hiryur, senior Ryan Hagemeier and sophomore Nick Aronoff into the singles bracket at the Sectional Tournament. Hiryur received the #1 seed heading into play last Thursday. He matched up against Leupen from Anderson and won 6-0, 6-0 in his first match. Hagemeier faced Gulasy from LaSalle in his first match and won 6-0, 6-0 as well. Aronoff got matched up with Laskey from Colerain and dropped his match 2-6, 0-6 to be eliminated. Hagemeier advanced to the quarterfinals with a win vs. Bryer from Amelia with a 6-1, 7-6 (2) win but then was eliminated by Sultan from Anderson by a score of 3-6, 2-6. Hiryur continued his dominance as he won 6-0, 6-0 over both Ryland from Oak Hills and Muscatello from Turpin to advance to the Semi-Finals. He faced Sultan in the semi-finals and won 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the Sectional Finals. There he faced #2 seeded Grant Wendel from Turpin and won the first set 7-6 (7), however, he dropped the last two sets by scores of 2-6, 2-6 to finish 2nd at Sectionals.
With his 2nd place finish, Hiryur qualified for the OHSAA Division I District Singles Tournament on Thursday, May 18 at Lindner Tennis Center (ATP) in Mason and will face Vishnu Srinath from Mason HS who finished 3rd in the Mason Sectional.
St. Xavier sent their top doubles teams of senior Peter Schulteis/sophomore Max DeCurtins and junior Joe Beischel/senior Cameron Geoppinger to the doubles bracket of the OHSAA Div. I Sectional Doubles Tournament. They recieved the #1 and #2 seeds, respectively to open play on Thursday. Schulteis/DeCurtins won their first match easily over Batten/Keith of Amelia 6-0, 6-0 and then beat Hurley/Reiring of Elder 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the semi-finals. Beischel/Geoppinger won their first match 6-0, 6-0 as well over Timmers/Accurso from Elder and won their second match 6-1, 6-0 over Colerain's team of Wells/Lorenz to advance to the other semi-final match. They faced the #3 seeded team of Vaz/Hussey from Walnut Hills and dropped a tight three set match by the score of 6-4, 6-4, 3-6. Schulteis/DeCurtins faced the #4 seeded team of Loepke/Hugenberg from Anderson HS and won easily 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the finals against Vaz/Hussey. Beischel/Geoppinger won the 3rd place match over Loepke/Hugenberg by a score of 6-3, 6-1 to take home 3rd place. Schulteis/DeCurtins claimed the 2017 OHSAA Div. I Sectional Championship with a 6-0, 6-0 win.
Both doubles teams will represent St. Xavier at the 2017 OHSAA Division I District Doubles Tournament on Thursday at the Lindner Tennis Center (ATP) in Mason. Schulteis/DeCurtins will face the 4th place Dayton sectional team of Guthrie/Enukonda from Beavercreek HS in the 1st match and Beischel/Geoppinger will face the 3rd place sectional team of Holbrook/Murphy from Centerville in their 1st match at District Tournament.
