The Varsity Baseball team finished their suspended game from April 4 vs Moeller on Tuesday evening. They looked to improve on their 9-1 overall record and 4-0 in the GCL which is the best start since the 2012 season when the Bombers started 14-2 overall to open the season. With the start, St. Xavier was voted #4 in the first Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association state poll of the season released on Monday. Moeller was voted #2 as they entered the game with an 11-1 record and 3-0 in the GCL.
The game was suspended in the middle of the 4th inning on Tuesday, April 4 with St. Xavier leading 1-0. The Bombers scored in the top of the 3rd inning after senior Peter Fisher tripled to deep left field with 2 outs. With senior Sam Klare at the plate, the Crusaders' pitcher committed a balk which allowed Fisher to score. Klare doubled to right field but was left stranded.
Junior starting pitcher Nathan Kappers cruised thru the first 3 innings on April 4. After walking the leadoff hitter in the 1st inning, he got out of the inning after some help from his defense who picked off the runner on a catcher Nick Meyer to short stop Trevor Kuncl pickoff. He retired the Crusaders in order in both the 2nd and 3rd innings before the rain started that caused the suspension of the game.
On Tuesday, April 18, Kappers took the mound again and picked up right where he left off. After surrendering a 1 out walk in the bottom of the 4th inning, he got out of the inning unscathed by forcing a fly out and picking the runner off. In the 5th inning, he gave up a two out walk but then struck out the next hitter to keep the no hit bid alive. In the 6th inning, he retired the first two batters but gave up a double to end the no hit bid. He bounced back and struck out the next hitter looking at a curveball. Kappers took the mound in the 7th inning with the 1-0 lead still and closed it out by forcing a fly out and a ground out for the first two outs and then striking out the last hitter of the game to seal the win.
The Bombers were led by Kappers on the mound who finished with a complete game (7 IP) one hit shutout. He struck out 6 batters total and allowed 4 walks as he improved to 4-0 on the season. Senior Jon Brus was 2 for 2 at the plate while Fisher finished 1 for 4 with the only run scored in the game. Klare finished 1 for 3 at the plate.
