The St. Xavier Volleyball team opened their season on Tuesday night at home against GCL South rival Moeller. The Crusaders finished runner-up in the State of Ohio last year as they lost in the State Championship game to another GCL South school, Elder. The league schedule is a brutal one as each team plays each other twice and the Bombers faced a tough test in the opener.
Moeller came ready to play after the Bombers jumped on them early in the 1st set. The Crusaders took control midway thru the set and finished it with a 25-20 win to jump ahead 1 game to 0 in the match. St. Xavier controlled the 2nd set and took it by a final score of 25-15 to even the match at 1 game a piece. The 3rd set is where things started to get exciting as it went back and forth all the way thru. Each team had a set point that was denied but Moeller eventually won the set by a score of 27-25 to go ahead 2 games to 1 in the match. Moeller looked like they might seal the deal in the 4th set as they jumped out to a 6-1 lead, however, St. Xavier battled back and took a 14-12 lead before a Moeller timeout. After the timeout, the Crusaders jumped back ahead 17-15 to force the Bombers to take time of their own to regroup. That is exactly what they did and scored the next 6 of 7 points to jump ahead 21-18. Moeller countered with their final timeout of the set and it worked for them as well as they scored the next 5 of 6 points to go ahead 23-22. St. Xavier burned their final timeout and it paid off as the Bombers scored the next 3 points of the set to win it 25-23 with the final point coming from a junior Kevin McCarthy service ace. The 4th set win forced a 5th set as the match was tied at 2 games a piece.
The 5th set was even better than the previous 4 sets as Moeller looked to be running away with it as they jumped ahead 8-5 and 13-9 to force two St. Xavier timeouts. After the 2nd timeout, the Bombers refocused and fought back to make it 13-12 before a Moeller timeout. The Crusaders scored the next point to make it 14-12 and were looking at match point but St. Xavier denied them twice by scoring the next two points. The Bombers would score once again to make it 15-14 but the Crusaders responded with their final point of the night to make it 15-15. The Bombers finally dug in and scored the next two points to gain the victory with the last point coming from a McCarthy kill.
St. Xavier was led by junior Ben Pung who recorded 24 kills, 13 digs, 3 blocks and 3 service aces while McCarthy finished with 13 kills and 2 service aces. Senior Thomas Roberts dished out 60 assists while coming up with 11 digs. Junior Henry Huber led the team in digs with 28 total. Senior John Hendy came up with 4 blocks to lead the team.

The fall sports season saw two ties for first place between St. Xavier and Elder when both the Football teams and Soccer teams tied for the league championship with the Panthers. The Bombers completed the sweep of the fall sports when Cross Country and Golf both won their respective league titles.
St. Xavier captured the Swimming league title once again to kick off the winter sports season while Bowling finished in third place for the Bombers. Basketball and Wrestling stayed competivtive but ended up in fourth place to round out the winter season.
With St. Xavier leading Elder by only three points heading to the spring sports season, the Bombers had to put together a collectively great season. That they did as Tennis won their 49th straight league title while Volleyball shared the league title with Moeller and Elder. Baseball beat the Panthers 2 out of 3 in their season series to claim third place over Elder. The Track team wrapped up the season with a third place finish at the GCL Championship Meet.
The trophy will remain at St. Xavier HS for another year and the Bombers' teams will look to win it once again in 2016-2017 school year.
