The 2017-2018 St. Xavier Basketball program has been practicing since November 3 to prepare for the upcoming season.  The Bombers will face another tough schedule this season as they look to improve on their 2016-2017 season.

It will be a tough December as most of the month, St. Xavier will hit the road.  They open the season at Anderson HS on Friday, December 1 at 7:30 pm in the Mercy Health Tip-Off Classic.  The Bombers defeated Anderson at home last season by a score of 52-42.  On Tuesday, December 5, St. Xavier will play its home opener vs. Middletown HS at 7:30 pm on a new floor in the Berning Gymnasium.  It will be the lone home game in December.  The Bombers will hit the road with games at Hughes (Dec 9), Badin (Dec 12), Oak Hills (Dec 16) and West Clermont (Dec 22) with all tips at 7:30 pm.  St. Xavier will stay in Ohio over Christmas Break as they will travel to Newark HS in Newark, OH just east of Columbus for a two day tournament starting on December 29.  They open the tournament with a game vs. Licking Heights at 6 pm on the 29th and then will play at either 3:00 or 4:30 on December 30 depending on the result of the game on the 29th.

St. Xavier will open GCL South play in January with a road game at Moeller on January 12, a home game vs. Elder on January 19 and a road game at LaSalle on January 26.  The Bombers will play at home four more times in January with games vs. Shroder (Jan 3), Roger Bacon (Jan 6), Alter (Jan 9) and Lakota West (Jan 16).  St. Xavier also travels to Beavercreek on January 23.

After a road GCL South game at Elder on February 2nd, St. Xavier hosts Bishop Fenwick on February 3rd then plays host to Moeller on February 9th.  The Walnut Hills Eagles play on the Bombers' home court on February 10th followed by another home game and senior night on February 16th vs. LaSalle.  The regular season ends with a game at Woodward HS on February 17.

The Varsity Basketball team looked to make it two wins in a row on Saturday night when they took on Lakota West at Hamilton HS in the 1st Round of the OHSAA Division I State Tournament.  The Bombers entered the game as the #16 seed in the SW District and the Firebirds of Lakota West were the #25 seed.  St. Xavier defeated Lakota West in the regular season by a score of 54-37 at Lakota West.

The 1st half was a defensive battle as Lakota West made their only field goal of the half 24 seconds into the game to take a 2-0 lead.  St. Xavier responded with 6 straight points as junior Bobby Jefferson scored 4 points on two layups.  The Firebirds converted a free throw before the end of the quarter and junior David Wassler scored on a layup before the buzzer to put St. Xavier ahead 8-3 at the end of the 1st quarter.  The 2nd quarter was much of the same for the Firebirds as they only mustered 3 more points from the free throw line and shot 1 for 16 from the field for the half.  The Bombers went 4 for 4 from the line in the 2nd quarter and senior Matthew Budde and Jefferson both scored in the paint to lead St. Xavier to a 16-6 lead at the half.

The 3rd quarter had more offense as each team scored more points in the quarter than they did in the whole first half.  The Bombers opened their lead to 11 points when Stockman converted a layup to put St. Xavier ahead 22-11 after each team traded baskets for much of the start of the quarter.  Lakota West answered with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 6 points at 22-16 but Jefferson converted two free throws and senior Daniel Keyes scored on a layup to get the lead back to 10 points.  After a three pointer by the Firebirds, Budde responded with a driving layup and a free throw after a foul was called on the made basket.  Senior Pete Rumpke converted two free throws and the Bombers got a stop before junior Andrew Wittrock went coast to coast for a layup in 5 seconds to give St. Xavier a 33-22 lead heading to the final quarter.  Keyes opened the 4th quarter with a three pointer and senior Gage Hammann converted a layup to give the Bombers their biggest lead of the game at 16 points.  The Firebirds tried to fight back but could not get any closer than 9 points the rest of the way.  St. Xavier shot 9 for 16 from the line in the quarter to seal the 51-40 win.

Jefferson led the Bombers with 11 points and 6 rebounds while Keyes and Budde each scored 7 points and each grabbed 2 rebounds.  Stockman finished the game with 6 points as he went 4 for 5 from the line.  Rumpke scored 4 points and grabbed 3 rebounds while Hammann had 4 points of his own and grabbed 4 rebounds.

With the win, St. Xavier advances to the 2nd round of the OHSAA State Tournament and will face the #4 seed Mason HS Comets at Lakota West HS on Wednesday, March 1 at 8:00 pm.

AquaBombers Ride Wave to 38th Championship

Following a remarkable performance at the District meet, head coach Tim Beerman and the staff made it quite clear that the final stage at State in Canton would require additional focus and effort. The athletes responded with the most dominant performance in Ohio high school swimming and diving history. St. Xavier, projected to score 388 points going into the event and 411 following prelims, continued to throw down one memorable swim after another. The final tally of 434 smashed the record set by the AquaBombers last year of 398. It marked the 38th crown for the program, 9th in a row and 18 in the last 19 years. The 38 is the most in any one OHSAA sport and places St. Xavier in a tie for OHSAA State Championships with 54.

Having qualified 32 opportunities to score at State, the team improved on that number by placing 34 performances on the scoreboard. The athletes improved their times from District at an 87% rate! Unraveling the meet certainly provided a highlight bonanza as the Blue and White won 8 of 12 events and set 5 State records. The eight 1st place swims ties the mark set by the vaunted 1973 St. X squad.

Grant House (SR), swam his way into the record books as he won the 200 Free – 1:34.59 (meet & school record – previously held by Olympic medalist Joe Hudepohl) and the 500 Free – 4:19.15 (meet, pool & school record – previously held by US National team member David Mosko). Joining his teammates in the 200 & 400 Free Relays, he garnered two more State and school records. His career culminated in the most State wins in Ohio history with 13 (8 individual & 5 relays). For his efforts in the 200 Free he was named Performer of the Meet, capturing the award for the second time. Head Coach Tim Beerman was named Coach of the Year.

But this was a total effort by athletes, coaches, family and support staff. Luke Sobolewski (SR) put on a show as well going a perfect 4 for 4. He raced to individual wins in the 100 Fly – 48.30 and 100 Back – 48.23 and was part of the 200 Medley Relay – 1:29.66 (meet & school record) and 400 Free Relay – 2:58.13 (meet & school record) Sobolewski’s wins for his state triumphs moved to 7 (3 individual & 4 relays).

Also joining the 4 for 4 club was Nick Perera (JR) who outdistanced the field in the 200 IM and was part of all three record setting relays including the 200 Free Relay – 1:21.44 (meet & school record). Perera now has 5 State wins on his resume. Fellow junior Justin Grender notched 3 victories as he was part of all three relays and also has 5 State gold medals. Senior captain Charles Leibson climbed on the podium twice as part of the 200 Medley & 200 Free Relays. His importance is reflected in the four State titles he earned at Canton in his career.

As is the case in recent years, the team’s performances have National implications. All the achievements listed above qualified for automatic All American status. The following also move on to the higher level of interscholastic athletics:

Gordon Wheeler   200 FREE – 1:38.45      Automatic All American

Charles Leibson     200 IM – 1:48.72          Automatic All American

                                                                   100 FREE – 45.73          Consideration All American

Christian Imbus     500 FREE – 4:29.90      Consideration All American

Sam Fallon             500 FREE 4:33.10            Consideration All American

Blake Brockman                   100 BREAST – 57.00     Consideration All American

Luke VanGorp      100 BREAST – 57:21     Consideration All American

National team titles (National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Associates and Swimming World Magazine) will not be finalized until California and other states wrap up championship events in May.

While the story in the pool was compelling, the excitement and support in the stands and on deck was unparalleled.     Fellow swimmers and divers joined by family, friends, administrators, fans and coaches provided an atmosphere that fed the 2016-2017 Ohio State Champions from St. Xavier High School.

The Varsity Basketball team has had an up and down year and on Saturday night the Senior class had an opportunity to end the year on an upswing in their final home game.  Even though Senior Night was celebrated at the home game vs. Elder, the Bombers went with a starting lineup of all seniors.  Greg Ruppert, Matthew Budde, Daniel Keyes, Pete Rumpke and Gage Hammann took the floor to start their final game in Berning Gymnasium.

Keyes and Rumpke got the Bombers off on the right foot as they both converted on layups to get St. Xavier out to a 4-0 lead.  The Warriors fought back and took the lead 6-5 but Hammann converted another layup and Ruppert made 2 free throws to make it 9-6 Bombers.  St. Xavier traded baskets with the Warriors to end the quarter with a lead of 13-10 as junior Bobby Jefferson answered a Warriors layup and Keyes converted his second layup of the game before a Warriors basket at the buzzer.  The Bombers took control of the game in the 2nd quarter as Jefferson opened it up with a layup.  Sophomore Nathan Stockman knocked down a 3 pointer and junior Chase Wolf converted a free throw.  Keyes knocked down a jumper and Rumpke went 2 for 2 from the line to lead the St. Xavier 10-1 run to take a 23-11 lead.  Budde got into the senior scoring action as he answered a Warriors' three pointer with one of his own to make it a 26-14 lead.  Keyes converted two free throws before the Warriors ended the half with two converted free throws of their own to make it a 28-16 halftime lead for the Bombers.

Rumpke and Budde both scored for St. Xavier early in the 3rd quarter to make it a 32-16 lead.  The Warriors fought back and managed to get the lead down to 10 points, 36-26, by the end of the quarter with a three pointer right before the horn.  Winton Woods outscored the Bombers 10-8 in the period to make the game feel tighter than it seemed to be going.  Hammann opened the final quarter with a jumper and after a free throw by the Warriors, the Bombers took control of the game.  Keyes fired in a three pointer and then junior Brandon Gilbert got the Baseline Bombers on their feet when he threw down a huge dunk in transition to extend the St. Xavier lead to 43-27.  Sophomore Thomas Kiessling came off the bench and converted a layup and a free throw for a conventional three point play that gave St. Xavier their biggest lead of the night at 18 points.  The Warriors could not bounce back and the Bombers sealed their 46-33 win.

St. Xavier was led by Keyes who scored 11 points on 4-7 shooting and grabbed 3 rebounds.  Jefferson finished with 8 points on 4-4 shooting with 2 rebounds.  Rumpke finished with 6 points and 3 rebounds while Budde score 5 points with 2 rebounds.  Hammann scored 4 points and grabbed 2 rebounds while Ruppert scored 3 points.

The Varsity Basketball team hosted the #1 team in the State of Ohio, the Moeller Crusaders, on Friday night.  The Bombers were looking to give Moeller their first loss of the season as they entered the night 13-0.  St. Xavier hung with the Crusaders in the 1st quarter as senior Daniel Keyes led the Bombers with 5 points and senior Gage Hammann and junior Bobby Jefferson each scored 4 points.  St. Xavier finished the quarter shooting 7-11 from the field including 2-4 from beyond the arc to score 17 points, however, the Crusaders were just as hot from the field as they finished 6-10 including 3-6 from beyond the arc to score 17 points as well.  The Bombers struggled offensively in the 2nd quarter while Moeller stayed hot.  The Crusaders scored 16 points in the quarter on 5-9 shooting from the field and only had 3 turnovers while St. Xavier only scored 8 points on 3-10 shooting and 6 turnovers.  Moeller led 33-25 at the half.  The Bombers' defense improved in the 3rd quarter as they held the Crusaders to 8 points on 3-12 shooting but the offense could not pick it up as they could only muster 6 points of their own.  Moeller would outscore St. Xavier by 10 points in the 4th quarter (17-7) to seal their 58-38 victory.

St. Xavier was led by Keyes who scored 11 points and grabbed 3 rebounds while senior Matthew Budde scored 9 points and had 3 rebounds as well.  Junior David Wassler led the Bombers in rebounds with 6 while adding 2 points.

St. Xavier looked to bounce back on Saturday night when they welcomed Anderson HS to Berning Gymnasium as the Redskins beat Milford in a big league win on Friday night.  The Bombers were led by Hammann who came out on fire as he scored the first 8 points for St. Xavier to open an 8-5 lead.  Junior Bobby Jefferson and sophomore Chris Payne added layups to close the quarter as the Bombers led 12-8 after the opening quarter.  After Anderson scored the first point of the 2nd quarter, St. Xavier went on a 5-0 run after a Keyes three pointer and a sophomore Luke Pellot layup to open a 17-9 lead.  Sophomore Nathan Stockman added a three pointer of his own and Keyes nailed another one to open up a 23-13 lead.  Anderson closed the gap before halftime as they went on an 8-3 run to close the halftime score to 26-21 in favor of the Bombers.  St. Xavier came out of the locker room looking to put the Redskins away and that they did as Keyes nailed another three and Wassler converted an old fashioned three point play with a layup and free throw to extend the lead to 32-21.  Keyes scored 5 more points in the quarter while Wassler had another layup to lead the Bombers to a 45-34 lead going into the final quarter.  The 4th quarter scoring started with a junior Chase Wolf steal that led to an "and one" layup to put St. Xavier ahead 48-34 after the converted free throw.  The Bombers would only score four more points the rest of the way but the defense held Anderson to 8 points in the quarter to seal the 52-42 win.

St. Xavier was led by Keyes who scored 16 points on 6-11 shooting from the field including 4-9 from beyond the arc.  Hammann added 10 points and while Wassler scored 5 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.  Jefferson added 7 points and 6 rebounds as well to help pace the Bombers to a victory.

The Varsity Basketball team looked to bounce back after suffering a loss on the road at Elder last Friday when they traveled to Lakota West HS to take on the Firebirds on Tuesday night.  Senior Gage Hammann started the game hot as he scored 6 of the first 7 St. Xavier points and then senior Daniel Keyes added his first three of the night to give the Bombers a 10-6 lead in the first 4 minutes of the 1st quarter.  Junior David Wassler added 2 free throws and Keyes found the bottom of the net from beyond the arc one more time to extend the lead to 15-9.  Junior Chase Wolf came off the bench and hit two three pointers in a span of 1:12 to round out a 21 point quarter for St. Xavier as the Bombers led 21-12 after the opening quarter.  The 2nd quarter was much of the same with a little less scoring as Keyes added 4 more points and Hammann nailed another jumper to lead St. Xavier into the locker room with a 31-22 lead.

The Bombers opened the 2nd half on a 7-0 run with Hammann scoring 4 points and Wassler scoring 3 points to extend the lead to 16 points.  St. Xavier only gave up six points in the quarter and ended up scoring 11 to open a 14 point lead heading into the final quarter.  Wassler opened the last quarter with two made jumpers and a layup and senior Matthew Budde nailed a three pointer to extend the lead to 22 points.  Junior Andrew Wittrock would add a layup to give the Bombers their largest lead at 24 points by a score of 53-29.  Lakota West scored the next 8 points to close the gap but it was not enough as St. Xavier sealed the 54-37 victory.

Keyes recorded his first career double double as he scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.  He also added 8 assists to round out the night.  Hammann led the team in scoring with 14 points and grabbed 4 rebounds while fellow big man Wassler added 12 points to give St. Xavier a 20-4 edge in points in the paint.  Wolf added 8 points on 3 for 6 shooting from the field.  The Bombers led for 29:07 of the game and forced 12 turnovers while only committing 10 turnovers of their own.

The Varsity Basketball team opened up a busy week of play on Tuesday night at home vs. Harrison HS ahead of their first GCL road game on Friday at Elder HS.  St. Xavier was ready to play as they came out with energy at both ends of the floor.  The Bombers stormed out a 10-0 lead as sophomore Chris Payne opened the game with two steals and two layups.  Senior Daniel Keyes, Matthew Budde and Gage Hammann all scored before the Wildcats got on the board.  St. Xavier forced Harrison into 8 turnovers in the 1st quarter as they opened up a 19-7 lead.  The Bombers maintained their lead in the 2nd quarter as they outscored Harrison 9-8 to lead by a score of 28-15 at the half.  Junior Chase Wolf knocked down a three pointer with 24 seconds left to extend the lead from 10 to 13.

The Bombers came out of the locker room looking to put the game out of reach and that is exactly what they did.  St. Xavier opened the 3rd quarter on a 9-3 run with Keyes opening the half with a runner in the lane followed by another Hammann layup.  Senior Pete Rumpke knocked down a three pointer and Keyes added two more free throws to extend the lead to 37-18 with 5:00 left in the quarter.  The Bombers kept the pressure on and forced 4 more Wildcats turnovers in the quarter and ended up outscoring Harrison 21-7.  Sophomore Nathan Stockman scored 6 points in the quarter to lead the Bombers to a 49-22 lead heading to the final quarter.  The last quarter was much of the same as the Bombers defense forced 5 more turnovers and Wolf led St. Xavier in scoring by knocking down two more three pointers.  The Bombers secured a 64-36 win and now turn their sights to GCL play.

Wolf led the Bombers as he scored 12 points on an effective 4 for 5 shooting from beyond the arc.  He added 3 assists and 1 rebound as well.  Keyes scored 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds while Stockman finished with 8 points.  Hammann led the team in rebounding with 7 and scored 6 points.  Payne finished the game with 3 steals, 4 points and 6 rebounds in 11 minutes of play.

With the win, St. Xavier improves to 5-6 on the season and will open GCL play on Friday night at Elder HS against the Panthers who stand at 4-4 on the season and 0-1 in GCL play.  The freshman game will kick the night off at 4:30 pm with JV at 6:00 pm and Varsity scheduled for a 7:30 pm tip.

The Varsity Basketball team looked to snap a 2 game losing streak on Friday night at home vs. Cincinnati Country Day and look to gain some momentum going into next week which includes the first GCL South game at Elder HS.  The Bombers opened up a lead in the 1st quarter after the game started out in a 4-4 tie.  Senior Daniel Keyes started the run with a 3 pointer and junior David Wassler converted a layup to put St. Xavier out ahead 9-4.  The Bombers never looked back from that point as Keyes added 5 more points in the first quarter and St. Xavier led 18-12 after the opening quarter.  The 2nd quarter was won in a big way by the Bombers as they only gave up 3 points during the quarter and scored 20 of their own.  They were led by a balanced scoring attack as seniors Gage Hammann and Matthew Budde each scored 4 points while junior Bobby Jefferson added 4 points of his own.  Wassler scored 3 points while Keyes fired in another three pointer with junior Chase Wolf adding the last basket to add it up to 20 points.  With the 20-3 quarter, St. Xavier took a commanding 38-15 lead at the half.

The third quarter was much of the same as St. Xavier as junior Brandon Gilbert led the scoring attack in the quarter with 6 points and sophomore Nathan Stockman scored 5 points.  Keyes found the bottom of the net from beyond the arc once again and at the end of the quarter the Bombers lead was extended to 60-22.  The 4th quarter saw sophomore Jared Kreimer score his first Varsity points as he had a 7 point quarter to lead St. Xavier to the 79-34 final score.

Keyes finished the game shooting 5-8 from the field and 4-5 from three point range and scored 15 points with 3 assists and 2 rebounds to lead the Bombers.  Gilbert recorded a double-double as he had 12 points and 10 rebounds and also recorded 2 assists.  Budde finished with 8 points and 2 rebounds.  Junior Andrew Wittrock did not score but did grab 6 rebounds, dished out 3 assists and had 2 steals in 12 minutes of play.

With the win, St. Xavier improves to 4-6 on the season.  The Bombers will play host to the Harrison HS Wildcats on Tuesday night at Berning Gym with the Freshman game kicking things off at 4:30 pm.  The JV game will start approximately at 6:00 pm with Varsity slated for a 7:30 pm tipoff.

The Varsity Basketball team dropped their opener in the The Rock Holiday Classic but looked to rebound on Wednesday evening when they played Cardinal Newman from Columbia, SC.  The Cardinals lost their first round game to St. Alban's of Washington, DC after leading for most of the game on Tuesday.  St. Xavier played Cardinal Newman in Atlanta, GA last year in the St. Pius X Christmas Classic and won 50-42.

Once again, the Bombers got off to a slow start as they dug themselves in a 9-2 hole but after a timeout, came out and settled in.  Junior Bobby Jefferson scored 7 points in the quarter and helped St. Xavier battle back and get the game to 16-13 before a buzzer beater three pointer from the Cardinals to make it a 19-13 game at the end of 1st quarter.  The Bombers came out and scored the first 5 points of the quarter by going 5-6 from the line in the first 2:30.  Senior Daniel Keyes nailed a three pointer to pull the game even at 21 and then junior Chase Wolf came up with a steal and fired in another three pointer to give St. Xavier their first lead of the game at 24-21.  After a Cardinals layup, Wolf drilled another three to make it a 27-23 lead but Cardinal Newman answered with a layup before the end of the half to make it a 27-25 Bomber lead at the half.  Keyes and Jefferson led St. Xavier with 7 points each at the half while Wolf scored 6 points.

After a Cardinals layup to tie the game to start the half, Keyes made another three pointer to make it 30-27.  However, Cardinal Newman scored the next 7 points to take a 34-30 lead.  St. Xavier battled back to tie it after layups from senior Gage Hammann and sophomore Chris Payne.  The Cardinals then scored the next four points to lead 38-34 and then led 40-36 with 2:13 left in the 3rd quarter.  Keyes came up with another big three pointer and then Hammann scored after grabbing an offensive rebound to give St. Xavier a 41-40 lead.  Junior Brandon Gilbert finished off a 7-0 run by the Bombers after grabbing an offensive rebound and putting it back in to give St. Xavier a 43-40 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter.  After a Cardinal Newman basket to open the final quarter, senior Matthew Budde nailed a huge three pointer to give St. Xavier a 46-42 lead.  The teams traded baskets for the next couple of minutes but the play of the game came when Budde drove the lane and was fouled while finishing a layup to put the Bombers back ahead by four points at 52-48.  The Cardinals head coach was assessed a technical foul for arguing the call and the Bombers scored three more points to get out to their largest lead of the game, 7, with 1:21 left in the game.  Unfortunately, the Bombers made it hard on themselves as they turned the ball over 5 times while trying to close out the game.  Cardinal Newman could not capitalize as they could only muster 3 points and Budde knocked down another free throw with 10 seconds left to give the Bombers a 56-51 win.

The Bombers were led by Keyes who finished with 15 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists while Budde finished with 9 points and 6 rebounds.  Hammann scored 8 points with 2 rebounds while Payne contributed 6 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.  Jefferson scored all of his 7 points in the 1st half and finished with 8 rebounds to lead St. Xavier on the boards.

With the win, St. Xavier improves to 3-4 on the season and will play North Laurel HS from Kentucky in the 5th place game on Thursday at 1:30 pm at Windermere Prep.  North Laurel features a senior Peyton Broughton who has scored 67 points and 42 points in games this season.  He is committed to play at Eastern Kentucky University of the Ohio Valley Conference next year.

The Varsity Basketball team flew down to Orlando, FL on Monday morning to participate in The Rock Holiday Classic on the campus of Windermere Prep HS.  The Bombers were matched up against tournament host, the Lakers of Windermere Prep in the 1st round on Tuesday evening.  The Lakers boast a wealth of talent including Memphis commit David Nickelberry and are the defending 3A State Champions in Florida.

St. Xavier started very slowly and dug themselves in a 12-0 hole before finally coming to life.  Sophomore Luke Pellot started the scoring by coming off the bench for an old fashioned 3 point play.  The Lakers scored the next 5 points and took a commanding 17-3 lead, however, the Bombers fought back.  St. Xavier fought back with a 20-11 run to get the game to 28-23 led by senior Daniel Keyes who scored 8 points during the run and senior Matthew Budde who scored 6 points.  It looked like that was how the quarter was going to end until Nickelberry fired in a half court shot at the buzzer to extend the lead to 31-23 after one quarter.  The Lakers would use that momentum to outscore the Bombers 23-15 in the 2nd quarter to take a 54-38 lead at the half.  St. Xavier was led by Keyes in the 1st half who scored 11 points followed by Budde with 10 points and Pellot with 8 points.  Nickelberry scored a game high 20 points in the 1st half to pace Windermere Prep.

The Bombers came out in the 2nd half looking to close the gap slowly but the Lakers had too much talent as they extended the lead to 20 points right out of the half.  However, the Bombers hung in there and cut the lead to 15 points by the end of the 3rd quarter with the score being 67-52.  Junior Bobby Jefferson led the way for the Bombers in the quarter as he scored 6 points and grabbed 3 rebounds.  Junior David Wassler also came up big for St. Xavier in the quarter as he scored 2 points, grabbed 3 rebounds and blocked a shot.  The Bombers would win the 4th quarter as well and cut the margin down to 13 points by the end of the game to 84-71.

St. Xavier drops to 2-4 on the season with the loss.  The Bombers were led by Budde who finished with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals while Pellot finished with 12 points and 2 rebounds.  Keyes finished with 11 points, 5 assists and 2 rebounds while Jefferson had 10 points and 5 rebounds.  Wassley also scored in double digits with 10 points while grabbing 4 rebounds and recording 2 blocks.  Junior Brandon Gilbert finished the game with 6 points on 3 for 3 shooting and grabbed 2 rebounds and dished out 2 assists.

The Bombers will look to rebound today as they battle Cardinal Newman HS out of Columbia, SC.  The Cardinals lost their 1st round game on Tuesday night as well.  St. Xavier played Cardinal Newman last year in the St. Pius X tournament and won that game by a score of 50-42.  The Cardinals come into the game with a 6-6 record on the season.

The St. Xavier Bombers' Basketball team had a long break in between games due to exams and looked to continue their winning ways on Tuesday night against Hamilton Badin HS.  St. Xavier went into the night on a two game winning streak beating Winton Woods and Hughes after losing to Fairfield in the season opener.  St. Xavier was also looking to keep alive a 7 game winning streak against the Rams.

It was all Bombers to start the game as senior Matthew Budde opened the scoring with a three pointer.  St. Xavier then converted on four straight trips to the free throw line and after a junior David Wassler lay in, Badin called timeout down 9-0.  Junior Chase Wolf fired in a three pointer after Badin scored their first bucket of the game to make it 12-2.  The Rams fought back and closed the gap to 15-9 at the end of the 1st quarter.  The 2nd quarter started the way the 1st quarter ended as Badin got the game to 15-13.  Senior Gage Hammann converted a three point play and after a Badin lay up, St. Xavier answered with three straight layups of their own with Budde getting two of them and senior Daniel Keyes converting one of them to extend the St. Xavier lead to 24-15.  Once again, the Rams fought back and pulled to within three, 28-25, by the end of the 1st half.  Budde led the way for St. Xavier in the 1st half with 9 points while Wassler scored 6 points.  However, the reason Badin kept it close is because they out rebounded the Bombers 12-9 with 5 offensive rebounds in the half.

The game stayed within the 1-3 point range as play went back and forth to start the 2nd half.  The Bombers finally found some breathing room as they went on an 10-2 run with two junior Bobby Jefferson layups and two junior Brandon Gilbert baskets with two Keyes' free throws to make it a 42-32 St. Xavier lead.  As was the case throughout the game, the Rams hung in there and battled back with a 7-0 run to close the quarter and cut the deficit to two points, 44-42, at the end of the 3rd quarter.  Badin used the end of the quarter momentum and scored the first 4 points of the 2nd half to take a 46-44 lead but the Bombers responded with two made free throws from Hammann.  Wassler and Jefferson then went 3-4 from the line to extend the St. Xavier lead to 49-46.  The Rams fought back with the next 5 points to take a 51-49 lead but the Bombers responded once again when sophomore Chris Payne came up with a put back to tie the game back up.  Badin scored the next 4 points to lead 55-51 then eventually opened up a 59-53 lead and held on despite three pointers from Wolf and Keyes at the end of the game and won 60-59.

St. Xavier was led by Keyes who scored 14 points but was held to 3-13 shooting and held 7 points below his season average.  Budde scored 11 points and grabbed 4 rebounds while Wassler scored 7 points.  Hammann finished with 7 points and 3 rebounds while Jefferson led the team in rebounding with 7 boards and finished with 6 points.

The Bombers drop to 2-2 on the season and travel to Roger Bacon HS on Friday night to take on the Spartans who stand at 4-1 on the season.  The Varsity game tips off at 7:30 pm with Freshman at 4:30 pm and JV at 6:00 pm.
