The Varsity Football Bombers entered Saturday night with an 11-1 record and faced the Colerain Cardinals who sported a 10-2 record on the season.  The two teams faced each other in Week 2 where the Cardinals jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the 4th quarter but St. Xavier came back to tie the game and eventually win 20-17 in overtime.  Since then, Colerain had won ten straight games as they swept thru the GMC to win the league title once again and the Bombers swept thru the GCL to win the league title as well.  The two teams have met the past 4 seasons in the post season as well with the Bombers winning in 2016 in the 2nd round in overtime.

Colerain came out and jumped on the Bombers early as they took the ball on the opening drive and kept it for 5:51 on a 14 play drive that went 80 yards and ended with a 1 yard touchdown run.  They converted the extra point and led 7-0 early.  St. Xavier had only one possession in the opening quarter and it ended with a punt on 4th down and 24.  Colerain's second possession ran out the end of the 1st quarter but the Bombers stopped the Cardinals on a 4th down and 2 from the St. Xavier 32 yard line to force a turnover on downs.  The Bombers offense could not convert a first down on the ensuing drive and junior WR/P Jared Kreimer pinned Colerain at their own 9 yard line with a 54 yard punt.  However, the Cardinals scored on the first play from scrimmage with a 91 yard run and an extra point to make it 14-0 with 10:16 left in the second quarter.  The St. Xavier offense responded with a 13 play 52 yard drive that ended with senior QB Chase Wolf found Kreimer for a 6 yard touchdown pass to make it 14-6 after a missed PAT.  Wolf  finished the drive 5 for 7 passing for 45 yards and Kreimer had 4 catches for 45 yards on the drive.  Each team traded punts as the half ended with Colerain leading 14-6.

St. Xavier opened the second half with the ball but did not pick up a first down and had to punt.  The Bombers defense came up big as they stopped the Cardinals on 4th down and 13 from the St. Xavier 31 yard line.  St. Xavier's offense took advantage as Wolf connected with senior WR Andrew Wittrock for 66 yards on the first play of the ensuing drive that put the Bombers on the Colerain 3 yard line.  Two plays later, Wolf connected with Wittrock again on a 6 yard touchdown pass and then connected with senior DL Bobby Jefferson on a 2 point conversion to tie the game at 14.  Colerain responded in a big way as they put together another 80 yard drive in 7 plays that ended with a 4 yard touchdown run and an extra point to take the lead right back at 21-14 with 4 seconds left in the 3rd quarter.  St. Xavier only had two possessions in the 4th quarter that ended in punts and Colerain ran out the clock with 6:24 left on the final possession to make it a 21-14 final score.

Wolf finished the game 15 for 22 passing with 168 yards and 2 touchdowns while Kreimer had 6 catches for 56 yards and a touchdown.  Wittrock had 4 catches for 80 yards and a touchdown.  Kreimer had 5 punts for an average of 46.8 and a long of 54 with 3 punts inside the 20 yard line.  The St. Xavier defense was led by senior LB Will Childs who finished with 11 tackles (1 TFL) while junior CB BJ Ferguson record 7 tackles (1 TFL).  Senior CB Johnny Marrocco, senior LB Thomas Kiessling and junior LB Thomas Kiessling all had 7 tackles as well.

The Bombers' finish the season with an 11-2 record and are the 2017 OHSAA Div. I Region 4 Runners up.  Season recap story will be posted soon.

The St. Xavier Varsity football Bombers finished the regular season at 9-1 and finished with the #1 seed in the Division I Region 4 computer rankings.  They hosted Fairfield HS in the 1st round and easily won 40-12 in a rematch of last year's first round game.  St. Xavier faced another playoff rematch in round two when they traveled to Mason HS on Friday night to take on Sycamore HS.  The Bombers and Aviators played each other last season in the Regional Finalsin a game that St. Xavier came back from a 14 point deficit late in the final quarter to win in overtime.  This year, the teams met in the Regional Semi Finals as Sycamore finished the regular season at 8-2 and won in the first round over Milford by a score of 41-35 in double overtime to advance.

The Aviators opened the game with the ball and picked up a first down quickly.  The Bombers' defense came up with their first big play of the night on 3rd down and 10 when senior DL Bobby Jefferson forced a fumble when he sacked Sycamore's quarterback and classmate Andrew Wittrock jumped on the loose ball.  The St. Xavier offense took over at the Aviators' 47 yard line but were forced to punt after only picking up one first down.  Three plays later, Sycamore connected on a 56 yard touchdown pass and converted the extra point to take a 7-0 lead with 6:48 left in the opening quarter.  The Bombers' offense responded quickly as senior QB Chase Wolf found senior WR Cameron Specht for a 9 yard completion and then one play later junior RB Chris Payne took a handoff and scampered 58 yards to the end zone for a touchdown.  Senior PK Donny Stock converted the PAT to tie the game at 7 with 5:26 left in the 1st quarter.  Each team then traded punts to end the 1st quarter.

The 2nd quarter started the way the 1st quarter ended as Sycamore and St. Xavier both punted on each team's 1st possession of the quarter.  The Bombers' defense stayed strong even though they gave up a 56 yard pass play and forced a punt after the Aviators reached the St. Xavier 38 yard line.  St. Xavier's offense then put together a 14 play, 80 yard drive that took 3:43 that ended with Payne scoring his second rushing touchdown on a 14 yard run and a Stock PAT to make it 14-7 with 3:26 left in the 1st half.  On the drive, Wolf completed 7 of 8 pass attempts for 57 yards while Payne had 3 carries for 18 yards.  The Bombers converted two third downs with a Shamsi 11 yard reception and a Kreimer 15 yard reception to keep the drive going.  Payne's scoring play came on a 4th down and 2 play.  St. Xavier's defense forced yet another Sycamore punt on the ensuing drive as senior LB Will Childs and junior LB Nathan Arthur came up with a sack on a 2nd and 10 play.  St. Xavier took a 14-7 lead to the locker room for halftime.

The Bombers opened the 2nd half with the ball and Wolf found senior WR Andrew Wittrock for 12 yards on the second play.  Wolf then scrambled for 16 yards two plays later for another first down.  After Payne carried the ball for 3 yards, Wolf connected with Kreimer on a 34 yard touchdown pass to put St. Xavier ahead 20-7 as the PAT failed with 9:47 left in the 3rd quarter.  The Bombers' defense stayed solid as Childs came up with another sack on 3rd down and 8 to force another Sycamore punt.  On the ensuing drive, the St. Xavier offense scored in just four plays on a drive that went 54 yards.  Senior RB Matthew Fox scored on a 32 yard touchdown run as he gained 46 of the 54 yards on the drive on 3 carries.  Wolf completed a pass to Kreimer to convert the two point conversion to make it a 28-7 lead with 7:01 left in the 3rd quarter.  On the ensuing kickoff, the Bombers pinned the Aviators at their own 2 yard line and did not allow any yards to force a punt.  The St. Xavier offense took over on the Sycamore 22 yard line after the punt but Wolf threw an interception at the Aviators 2 yard line.  On the ensuing play, Childs stopped Sycamore's quarterback for a 2 yard loss to force a safety and make it a 30-7 lead for St. Xavier.  The Bombers offense could not pick up a first down on the next possession and punted the ball back to Sycamore.  The St. Xavier defense stayed dominant and forced another three and out and Aviator punt.  The Sycamore offense gained -2 yards in the 3rd quarter as the Bombers held a 30-7 lead.  St. Xavier put the game out of reach as they put together an 8 play, 38 yard drive that ended when sophomore RB Kellen Newman scored from 8 yards out on a touchdown rush.  Stock converted the PAT to make it a 37-7 lead.  With a running clock, each team could not get much going and the game ended with the 37-7 St. Xavier victory.

The Bombers' defense was dominant all night as they only allowed 45 yards in the 2nd half and forced Sycamore to punt it a total of 8 times during the game.  They forced one turnover and held the Aviators to 2 for 11 on third down conversions.  Childs led the attack with 10 tackles (3.5 TFL), 2.5 sacks and 1 quarterback hurry.  Junior LB Trevor Potts had 7 tackles while junior WS Nathan Stockman record 6 tackles.  Arthur finished with 5 tackles (1.5 TFL) and 1.5 sacks.  Senior LB Blake Bacevich recorded 4 tackles while Jefferson finished with 4 tackles (1 TFL), 1 sack and a forced fumble.

The St. Xavier offense used the momentum gained from the defense dominating to put 23 points on the board in the 2nd half for a total of 37 points.  They had 370 yards and had 17 first downs on the night.  They were led by Payne who finished with 13 carries for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns.  He was running behind the offensive line of sophomore Paris Johnson, senior Jack Dirksing, senior Evan Deters, junior Matthew Mohn and senior Michael Kronenberger who controlled the line of scrimmage all night.  Wolf finished the night 17 for 28 passing with 151 yards and 1 TD with 1 INT.  Fox finished the night with 54 yards on 8 carries and a TD while Newman had 6 carries for 19 yards and a TD.  Specht finished with 8 catches for 50 yards while Kreimer had 2 catches for 53 yards and a TD.

With the win, St. Xavier improves to 11-1 overall on the season and advances to the OHSAA Div. I Regional Final game for the second straight season.  They will take on Colerain HS in another rematch from a game in the playoffs last year.  The Bombers beat the Cardinals in the 2nd round last season in double overtime after coming from behind late in the game.  St. Xavier also beat Colerain in Week 2 of the 2017 regular season at Colerain after coming from behind from a 14-0 deficit in the final quarter to tie the game.  The Bombers won in overtime by a score of 20-17 on a rainy, windy night.  It will be the 4th straight season in which St. Xavier and Colerain will meet in the OHSAA Div. I Playoffs.  The game will be on Friday, November 17 with kickoff at 7:30 pm.  The site will be announced by the OHSAA on Sunday afternoon and ticket information will follow shortly after that announcement.  Click here for Ticket Information when it becomes available.

The Varsity Football Bombers finished the regular season with a 9-1 record with their only blemish coming in a road loss to Cleveland St. Ignatius in Week 9.  St. Xavier earned the #1 seed in the OHSAA Div. I Region 4 playoffs which entitled them to a home game in round 1.  The Bombers hosted the #8 seeded Fairfield Indians at St. Xavier Stadium on Friday night.  St. Xavier and Fairfield played in the first round last year at Fairfield HS as the Bombers won 35-14 to start their climb to the 2016 OHSAA Div. I State Championship.

Fairfield kicked off to the Bombers to start the night.  The Indians tried to kick it short and recover it but senior Ben Coffaro, a second line blocker on kickoff return, caught it and ran it 9 yards to the St. Xavier 48 yard line.  The Bombers' offense could not take advantage of good field position as they went three plays and out.  Junior WR/P Jared Kreimer, who won GCL South Punter of the Year, hit a punt that went 49 yards and was downed at the Fairfield 4 yard line.  The St. Xavier defense capitalized as senior LB Will Childs came up with a sack for a safety on 3rd down to give the Bombers a 2-0 lead.  On the ensuing free kick, senior WR Andrew Wittrock returned the kick 19 yards to the Indians' 49 yard line to give the St. Xavier offense good field position yet again.  Unfortunately, for the Bombers, senior QB Chase Wolf was sacked and lost a fumble when going down that was recovered by Fairfield.  The Indians took advantage as they drove 46 yards in 9 plays and scored a touchdown on a 9 yard run.  The extra point attempt was blocked by senior LB Blake Bacevich but Fairfield led 6-2 with 5:10 left in the 1st quarter.  The St. Xavier offense once again started with great field position as Kreimer returned the ensuing kickoff 43 yards to the Bombers' 46 yard line.  This time the St. Xavier offense took advantage as Wolf completed a pass to senior RB Matthew Fox for 11 yards on 1st down and then found Kreimer down the left sideline for 42 yards to the Indians' 1 yard line.  Fox finished the 3 play drive off with a 1 yard touchdown run and senior PK Donny Stock added the PAT to make it a 9-6 St. Xavier lead with 4:43 left in the opening quarter.  The Indians came out and responded as they drove the ball down the Bombers' 43 yard line as the 1st quarter came to a close.

The 2nd quarter started with the Indians inside St. Xavier territory but the Bombers defense stepped up and forced a Fairfield punt that was downed at the St. Xavier 23 yard line.  On the very next play from scrimmage, Wolf found Wittrock who found the open field and sprinted to the endzone for a 77 yard touchdown catch.  Stock added the PAT and just like that, the Bombers' lead extended to 16-6.  The St. Xavier defense allowed only 8 yards on the ensuing drive and forced another punt which led to the Bombers' offense to start at midfield.  However, after one first down on a Wolf pass to Kreimer, the St. Xavier offense turned the ball over on downs as they could not recover from allowing a sack.  Fairfield took over at their own 33 yard line but once again the Bombers' defense was up to the task as senior Sean Mesue and Childs came up with a tackle for a loss on 3rd down and 1 to force a punt.  On the very next play, Wolf found Wittrock again for a 38 yard pass completion to move the ball to the Indians' 30 yard line.  Unfortunately, the Bombers could not get another first down as they turned the ball over on downs once again after Wolf found Kreimer for a 9 yard completion that came up a yard short of a first down on 4th down.  The Indians picked up a first down on a 15 yard personal foul penalty by the Bombers but the St. Xavier defense forced a punt that allowed the Bombers' to take possession with 1:07 left in the half at their own 15 yard line.  After two incomplete passes, Fox took a hand off and rushed 11 yards for a first down.  Wolf then connected with senior WR Nick Shamsi for 6 yards on the next play.  He then found senior WR Cameron Specht on the next two pass plays that resulted in 15 more yards.  Wolf then found Wittrock for 16 more yards two plays later to move the ball to the Indians' 37 yard line with 5 seconds left.  St. Xavier took a timeout and sent the offense back on the field for one more play.  On the final play of the half, Wolf launched a ball to the endzone that found Kreimer in perfect stride to get a foot down in the back of the endzone for a 37 yard touchdown pass as time expired.  Stock added the PAT and the Bombers took a 23-6 lead to the locker room after a 9 play 85 yard drive in just 1:07.

St. Xavier outgained the Indians in the first half as they had 274 total yards to Fairfield's 125 yards.  The Bombers had 262 pass yards while the St. Xavier defense only allowed 7 pass yards.  The time of possession favored St. Xavier heavily as well as the Bombers had it 17:55 to the Indians' 6:50 at the half.

Fairfield started with the ball to open the 2nd half and came up with two first downs to move the ball to their own 45 yard line.  Childs and junior Thomas Kiessling came up with a tackle for a loss on 2nd down and 10 and then Childs and junior LB Trevor Potts came up with a sack on 3rd down to force another Fairfield punt.  The Bombers' offense started with the ball at their own 45 yard line.  Wolf completed a pass to Wittrock on the first play of the drive and then the Bombers' faced a 3rd down and 12 but Wolf found Specht for 10 yards to make it 4th down and 2 at the Fairfield 30 yard line.  St. Xavier decided to go for it and Wolf threw a pass towards Wittrock but if fell incomplete but the Indians were called for pass interference and the Bombers had new life.  After a 3 yard completion to Wittrock, Wolf connected with Shamsi for a 12 yard touchdown pass to cap a 6 play, 55 yard drive.  Stock converted the PAT to put the Bombers ahead 30-6 with 5:03 left in the 3rd quarter.  On the ensuing drive, the St. Xavier defense forced the Fairfield offense backwards as senior DE Bobby Jefferson had a sack on 1st down.  Kiessling and senior Jack Logsdon had a tackle for loss on 2nd down and Logsdon and Childs had a sack on 3rd down to force another Indians' punt.  The punt only traveled 10 yards and the Bombers' offense started at the Fairfield 23 yard line.  Wolf found Specht on a 23 yard touchdown pass on the very first play and with a Stock PAT it was a 37-6 lead for the Bombers with 2:59 left in the 3rd quarter.  After a touchback by Stock on the ensuing kickoff, the Indians' took the first play 79 yards and looked to have a touchdown but junior CB BJ Ferguson chased the running back down and forced a fumble that senior CB Johnny Marrocco jumped on to give the ball back to St. Xavier and keep Fairfield off the scoreboard.

The 4th quarter started with St. Xavier at their own 33 yard line facing a 3rd down and 10 but Wolf connected with Specht for a 10 yard completion to pick up the first down.  Three plays later on 3rd down and 13, Wolf completed a 33 yard pass to Kreimer to the Fairfield 27 yard line.  St. Xavier picked up another first down on 4th down and 8 when Wolf connected with sophomore WR Marshall Lang for a 10 yard completion.  The drive stalled out and Stock came on to make a 33 yard field goal to make it a 40-6 lead.  With a running clock, the quarter went quickly but Fairfield drove down the field and scored a touchdown with 4 seconds remaining.  Their two point conversion failed to make it a final score of 40-12.

The St. Xavier offense gained a season high 401 yards behind Wolf who finished the game 23 for 37 passing for 374 yards and 4 touchdowns with no interceptions.  Specht led the team with 7 catches for 60 yards and a touchdown.  Wittrock finished with 5 catches and a team leading 151 yards with 1 touchdown.  Kreimer also finished with 5 catches for 127 yards and a touchdown.  Shamsi finished with 2 catches for 18 yards and a touchdown as well.  Wolf led the team in rushing with 4 carries for 21 yards while Fox had 3 carries for 10 yards and a rushing touchdown.

The Bombers' defense only allowed 274 total yards and forced 1 turnover and came up with 5 sacks.  Childs led the swarming attack with 13 tackles (1 TFL) and 2 sacks.  Kiessling finished with 9 tackles (2 TFL) while Potts finished with 8 tackles (1 TFL) and 1 sack.  Jefferson had 7 tackles (2 TFL) and 1 sack.  Bacevich finished with 6 tackles (2 TFL) and a blocked kick.
